What operating system are you using? Is the button stuck? Are you using the shut down process? Are you holding the button for 4 full seconds?

i'm using windows XP. button stuck ? - no. tes i'am using the shut down process. button for 4 sec. ? ya mean the button on the tower ?

thansk

Yes, the button on the tower. Hold it down for 4 seconds. It should turn off.

i was always under the opinion that shuting it down from the physcial button was bad for thr PC. must have changed w/ XP ??

thanks for the response.

no, it hasnt. as long as the os has shut down, its fine to turn off the power.

redwench, sorry i'm green w/ PC's. so i shut it down "normaly" w/ the start button ( but it dont shut down just reboots to the log on screen ). then push the button on the tower for a few sec till it shuts down ?

if its not going through shutdown, your issue has nothing to do with the power button.

ok, then any idea where to go from here ? to recap:

1)start 2)turn off computer then acts like it gonna shut down then it just reboots & land me at the log on page .....

dunno

Just as a suggestion and prob won't do any good but check the power buttons connection to the motherboard and make sure its pluged up right and all that good stuff. Make sure its on the right pins and what not.

Have a look in device manager and see whether your computer is listed as an ACPI PC (or something similar) as if Windows has incorrectly detected the type of power management your board is capable it can cause this type of issue. If it's not listed as ACPI you're going to require a repair install with some manic F5 pressing at startup to change the HAL type.
