Hello,
First off, thanks for taking the time to read this.
My PC recently contracted a virus at least that's what the Microsoft prompts have been telling me lately although I think they are imposters. After realizing this problem I installed Zone alarm on my system. That cleaned it up considerably bit but my homepage which used to be set to google.ca (and still is) was automatically going to /www.todaywarnings.com/. They're telling me my computer has a virus and prompting me to buy their software to clean the virus out. What can I do? I've since run an updated version of Ad-Aware to further clean my system and that found a few more items but the homepage hi-jack still occurs. Short of wiping my system is there anything else that can be done?
I'd appreciate any suggestions you would have. Again, thanks for your time and consideration regarding this.
Kind regards,
Frank

First of all, don't rely on just one antivirus software. No Antivirus or Antispyware, for that matter, is 100% at catching viruses, worms and trojan horses.
Always, after a confirmed or suspected virus attack. Run your own a.v. and then a couple of on line virus scanners, like "Bitdefender on line" and "Trend Micro , housecall".
Links below.

Also download and run Spybot and Spysweeper. Spysweeper, also have a good anti hijack shield.
Another tip, is to replace the Zone Alarm antivirus with Avast instead. Zone Alarm, is good at making firewalls. But as antivirus programme, I'm not that impressed.
How to deal with " Todays Warnings", trying to sell you their software. I'm not sure, as I dont know what actions you actually can take there. Maybe someone else here can give that info to you?

The above post are good. Its probably Spyware or malware. The change is being done by a hook into IExplorer, just as some programs would add a plug in button to it.
-AVG is a good Freeware antivirus.I prefer it over Avast.Google either for free download.
-Try HijackThis. It gives a good snapshot of whats running on your machine(alot better than the task list). Then Google some of the suspect entries to see what they are. Some good sites to check out dubious program info are-

&

Once you get your confidence in your machine go to this site.It has tools to help plug hacker holes & a special service called SHIELDS UP!!!It will check your machine(by permission)against hacker attacks. It has total port checks(if ones used just click on it & the communicating web site is displayed).A good read if you want to learn about Zombie machines(I dont believe this involves you).Go to-

grc is very old school, from before the days of free firewalls. just install a firewall if you dont have one and skip the site, unless youd care to read his stuff for informational purposes.
