common XP startup programs

Alright, after going through a friend's process list in hopes of cleaning up her computer, I decided I would do so to mine as well. I've been having my own problems, and I'd like to clear up what processes are native to Windows XP and when they run/where they should be designated from running from.

For example: I've got (edit)6 instances of svchost.exe running whenever I first start up. Now, I know that Windows XP usually starts three or four instances of the program by itself, but I've also heard of a virus that uses the same name. Two of these are (in the User Name column) a network service, three are a system service, and one is designated Local service...could that solitary Local service be my problem program??

Other than that, I think I am alright...my friend, however, has a lot of work left on their computer. I know I could disable some of the things with msconfig, but are there any other XP tools I should know about as far as disabling/deleting problematic programs?

I wouldn't worry too much about 6 instances of svchost, I have just checked my machine & I have 7 running & I am pretty sure that I don't have a virus.
Have you run Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoft.com to make sure that you don't have any spyware/adware? You could also run HijackThis (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html)
& check through the list of programs that are running. Don't remove any of them until you have checked out what they are. Some are obvious, ones that you don't recognize you need to run a google search to what they are. If they are malicious, you can then remove them.
