Ten Reasons to Buy Windows Vista

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Yahoo news has an article up of some of the highlights of Windows Vista so far. And also, a few drawbacks.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months, you probably know that the latest version of Windows--called Vista--is due to hit store shelves later this year (in time for the holidays, Microsoft tells us). The successor to
Windows XP offers a little something for everyone, from eye-catching graphics and new bundled applications to more-rigorous security. In fact, there is so much in the new operating system that it can be tough to get a handle on it all.

I've been noodling around with a recent beta version of Windows Vista (Build 5270) and had a chance to make some observations. While the sleek new look and polished interface caught my eye, it's what's under the covers that impressed me most. Microsoft's done a great job of improving security across the board. Things like Windows and spyware library updates are streamlined, and I definitely appreciate the more robust Backup software.

Check out the list here.

I heard Vista has a mode where it shuts all non-essential services and programs down for when you go into gaming mode. If so, it might be a worthy gaming platform. Which would be the only thing it would have to offer me.

I'm more curious about how DRM will be handled. I have no use for an OS with restrictive media control. But in Microsoft's defense, I don't think they care for it either.

the article goes on and on about new features yet you can sum it up into 3 items, improved security (which if its actually any good would be pretty cool), it looks pretty (nice for Joe Public but surely totally irrelevent for techies and anyone that actually cares how they run??), and updated apps (which surely doesnt count as a new feature as theyre always releasing new versions of their apps anyway??)

In fact, from the article the new security/update features are the only worthwhile feature so far implemented (I repeat, making it look pretty is not a feature, its like saying a polished blue table is nicer than a dull brown one.). Even then, whilst its had its bad moments the security on xp does the job the majority of the time, so even that can hardly be considered a big plus...

I dont know, I guess im just getting fustrated at all these articles lauding these great new features and changes when in terms of core usefulness not much is changing (or neeeded changing) at all

/rant over :P

But do the windows explode when you close them?

Posted by: Andrew7689

Hello

Well so far i am not impressed with this operating system and this time i am not going to rush out and buy it, like i did with windows xp, and soon after i bought windows xp microsoft said there was a very serious secruity issue with internet explorer 6, this was well before service pack 1 came out, and it took ages to download all the patches for that first version of windows xp, it took me eight to ten hours, at 512k broadband speeds, then that version had problems with usb, and if there was any problems with service pack 1 then if you reinstalled it, you would lose usb altogether, meaning i could no longer go on the internet.

So basically i will wait untill the end of next year before i even think about buying it, and also i will wait untill they decide to stop support for windows xp.

I have heard that if you bought windows vista then you will need a minium of GeForce 6 Series card to run it, like a 6600 GT and also recommended 256 meg of graphics memory, and also it takes up 800 meg of memory, so you need min of 1 gig of memory and recommended of 2 gig of memory, also the system memory speed as to be faster than 1800 meg/per seconds.

Some tight specs there, just like with HD TV pictures on your pc.

Also if your board goes faulty and you get a replacement board, then this windows vista is registered to the other board with the serial number, and a new board viods the registration of it, due to the new board having a different serial number, even if the board is the same model number.

Regards

Andrew

If the windows exploded when you closed them, I'd buy it.

Otherwise I'll probably just sample it indefinitely.

An operating system that requires a 256 MB graphics card?

Pfft.

Posted by: Andrew7689

Hello

Well you need a min of 256 meg in the graphics card to run the new graphical interface called Aero, if you had 128 meg the the performance of Aero would be reduced

Also i have now installed windows vista beta on my computer, and the only games i can run are SimCity 3000 World Edition and SimCity 4 even though while these games where running the graphics was slow on screen and if you went faster with the months it took ages to change to the next month, this occured in both, i tried Empires - Dawn of the Modern World and this game did not work, although it did start to load it, but before the menu screen came up it stopped working, and i also tried Traffic Giant, this game would not even start.

So, all i can say for now is that some games may not work, i have installed windows vista on a separate harddisk, and also activated it, i am at the moment trying all my games i have, i have over 200 games, and when i have them all installed it takes up 276 gig of room, and some of these games do not work in windows xp, like fifth element.

Running Vista Beta 64 with a 256meg vid and 2 gig of ram - graphics skip in itunes visualization. What kind of $$%%% is that. I just blamed it on 64-bit compatibility but listening to you folks I'm not so sure.

I have got Vista Beta 2 installed & so far I like the new look, but with all things Microsoft, it won't be worth rushing out to buy it. When it does eventually arrive, it will have issues. They always do, don't they?
I got my broadband modem installed no problem. Although I used the Windows XP driver, it works OK.
I also installed Office 2007 Beta 2.
I did try installing on my laptop, but was told I need at least 512mb RAM & 15gb drive space.
This seems a bit like overkill to me & needing 256mb graphics for the Aero bit is ridiculous.
Have said that, It does seem to run OK on my 1ghz Duron processor & 640mb RAM. Dual boots with Windows XP alright as well.

Vista seems to be crap. I definatley won't get it. Perhaps I should make a thread called 10 reasons not to buy vista...

Posted by: shadysoldier

im buying it becuase of dx10....... only reason

Posted by: gam3r

Yeah I don't think I'll be rushing out to get it. It's also pretty ridiculous that you need to have higher specs to run it, nicely at least...

So far I've found it impossible to install it on a SATA drive because Gigabyte Technologies doesn't have drivers for the ports that will work with Vista Beta 2. I've put it on a smaller IDE drive I have, but since I bought it for a much older PC I don't want to keep the drive in my Athlon X2 rig. I keep encountering ads for new PCs with SATA drives that read "Vista Ready." The question is whether Vista will be ready to set up on SATA drives when it is publicly released.

Posted by: P0nix

That's why Vista is out now, to push hardware manufacturers to make drivers accordingly and have an OS test bed for their software. Maybe that way it won't totally flop when it is released later this year.

Posted by: uh...ok

They're going to release it this year?

You guys are far too optimistic.

Posted by: kestrel1

From what I have read, Vista won't be out until 2007 at the earliest.
Maybe if MS had released XP as a Beta to the public it wouldn't be on SP2 right now. If they did release XP Beta I never saw it.
It is typical MS policy, let the public find the bugs. Then try to fix them.

Hello

Well my board is an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe, Sata works fine on this board, does not like Raid (Intel) though, the only problem with this board is the 3com network, windows vista has not the drivers pre loaded, i can only get these drivers if i go on line with windows vista and download them, but since my internet is a gateway type that runs through the network port.

I can use windows vista fully on my MSI Mega 865 Deluxe though.

Also at my friends i installed vista on a separate hard disk and tested some of my game, well he can get internet access through vista, anyway the only game so far that worked perfectly was "Alias", the game uses 3d graphics, i had it on anti liasing, and at 1280 x 1024.

Vista was slated(pushed back some more) for january of next year but I won't be surprised If they release it before the holidays.

It is being released later this year.... the corparate editions that is.

retail home users will see it on the self in janurary. Knowing microsoft, it will more likely be pushed back than put on shelves sooner.

The reason why todays video cards and computers are having troubles with the interface being slow and skippy is because of many reasons. The top 3 being:
1) the 'current' vista is in beta. Aero needs some tuning and will need its code to be cleaned up to make it faster and possibly use less resources.
2) Current hardware maybe awesome for XP. But vista is a new generation OS. As in, your comparing the performance and hardware like of a mid 70's Sports car, to a ferrari enzo. The new gen is gonna need the horsepower to perform its best here.
3) Vista is going to house the new Directx10 ! meaning new video cards will be needed to ge the best rendering in games, and to run Aero properly. Right now I've read that vista is using some added software to emulate directx10, for when you are using your directx9 card. Directx10 is another reason for gamers to upgrade to vista (and their video cards).

I will be grabbing the home retail in Jan. Its going to have some bumps at first, but I think it will be worth it.

How about this weeks "PRE RELEASE" version. I have a new SATA setup and would love to try it, but you guys have me runnin' scared,. I have another 10k drive ordered and want to try it on that and use my existing 7200rpm drive for storage. I figure if it screws up, my data on the other drive should still be salvagable. Or am I dreaming again? My system says it's Vista ready also???

Posted by: seabrightjw

Not the system I show on sign. My new Gateway 825GM, Intel 915GS, P4 3.4, 2GB CL2, WD2000 SATA Windows XP Media Center.

Vista should work very well on that sort of system. I have it running on an AMD Duron 1ghz machine with 640mb ram. Got it dual booting with XP. Got Vista setup on a 40gb drive that is attached to a PCI IDE card, as all of my other IDE sockets are used up. Used the driver disk for the PCI card that came for XP & got it installed no problem. Just downloading RC1 at present, but Beta 2 seems OK.
