Outlook Express 6 ...connection problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I cannot use my Outlook express 6 . When I bring it up to write an e-mail I get the
message "unable to establish connection". I have DSL through SBC.
I get a window that says 'Dial Up connection Box'. And they give options. I highlight DSL connection, and then it TRIES to make a connection thru the phone line. <says 'dialing
attempt 1, redialing in 5 seconds.Dialing attempt 2, redialing in 5 seconds. Eventually it says Unable to establish connection.
I have a feeling it has something to do with settings SOMEWHERE, but not sure where, and don't know how to fix this.
Has anyone out there had this problem and got it fixed ? Or know how to fix it ?

Would other EMAIL programs on the same machine screw it up, or what ?

You people are a real blessing to me. And I appreciate all the help I receive from you.
Thanks. (zuki) lauriezuki

If you go to start and right click on internet explorer, select internet properties, go to connections and make sure there are no dial up connections listed there, delete any dialup connections.
Go to LAN settings and make sure automatically detect settings is selected, give it a whirl and give us your feedback

teraside, Thanks for responding. I tried that. The Network connections have 3 parts. One says 'Broadband DSL'.That has 3 entries under it. 'My isp, SbcDSL, DSLconnection. (And it says 'DISconnected under these entries.)

The second section says 'Dialup and Virtual Private Network Settings'. That has 6 entries under it.
sbc DSL, DSL Connection, My ISP, SBC Yahoo (Default), SBC SmartIssue, and sbcyahoo. (And it says "DISconnected under these entries too)

The third section says "LAN or high speed Internet" One item under that says "LOCAL AREA Connection"...and This entry says "CONNECTED" under it.

When I checked the Internet Properties>Connections...it is marked for "NEVER dial a connection"

and the LAN setting is marked ...Automatically detect settings.

And I still get that message with Outlook Express about trying to dial .....and unable to establish.

any other ideas ?

If you've got an ADSL router you can contact your ISP and ask them to help you set up a 24 hour connection to them, you can only do this with an ADSL (DSL) router, not a usb modem.
Make sure to phone them, they will most propably tell you to delete all the dialup entries. If you've got DSL it means you should have a 24 hour internet connection, and not something you dial into.
If they set your pc up to dial in to them, you can change it, it's your choice. Delete all the dialup entries and all those from VPN, make sure you're not using any proxies in LAN settings, so you can access your router.

If you phone them ask them to help you set it up, your problems will be gone,
Outlook express can't choose by itself which is the correct connection to dial into, even if you choose the correct from outlook express it won't work if you've got a 24 hour connection. DELETE THE ENTRIES! Remove them. All of them.

It's your ISP's responsibilty to help you if you've got problems with your internet connection, any problems, please phone them, tell them what outlook express is doing and that you need a 24 hour connection setup through your router.

Your not supposed to have any entries in the Virtual Private Network(VPN) settings, unless you've got a VPN connection. I doubt that you have that. Delete all the entries you can find that has anything to do with dialing or SBC or Yahoo or whatever, don't disable or delete high speed lan.

Teraside, Thank you....I got it fixed...It was under the setup for outlook express, and under the connections there, it was checked as "dial-up: DSL conn"...But there was a dropdown box that gave
other options. and LAN conn. was one of the options. And that's what should have been checked.
After changing that, I don't get that dial up connection box any more. And I CAN send and receive E-Mail from Outlook express....THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP !!! You people on this board are just incredible. (Just hope I don't have to ever change it again, because I'll probably never FIND it again.LOL) THREE CHEERS for TERASIDE !!!
