Outsourcing national security to the private sector -
quite a backstab coming from one whose entire marketing campaign revolved around the so-called "war on terror"
wonder how his followers will take it http://img.presence-pc.com/forum/im...erso/kryten.gif

Port security is in the hands of the Port Authority for each respective port. The Port Authorities are not being handed over to the UAE firm.
That said, there are a lot of reasons why I'd rather see an American company in control of American ports.

nothing to do with national security there, a uae company bought the firm that owns the commercial ports.

Nothing to do with security? Port authority itself may not be privatized but it's de facto security outsourcing nevertheless.
"I think there ought to be a full and public review before this company is allowed to control security up and down the East Coast." - Sen. Schummer, D-N.Y.
I say the bloke knows what he's talking about.
To the mods - could this be moved to General Discussions?

IceBreaker, you tell us how it affects security.
The Port Authority is responsible for security. The Port Authority are the police and the investigators for the port.
As for moving this to general/off-topic, it's still a "Rant" until you provide some concrete evidence backing up your belief. Until then, your argument boils down to "All Arabs and Arab companies are bad and terrorists" -- which is certainly a rant, and untrue, at that.

No, but what you're saying IS a rant
So you're siding with Bush on this one - right? He's the one who OKd the deal
/rant
Now then - you've got one of your own senators who thinks there's a security risk
If the fact he's Democrat irks you then you'll be interested to know that two more senators inc. one Repug share the same concern (§6)
It gets better:
More senators from both parties - who intend to block the deal
And better:
Members from your Congress, also questioning the deal.
Why would they all object? For rant's sake?

Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation, a U.K. company, currently owns those ports. How is that any more "outsourced" than a company from Dubai? The other major ports in the US are owned by a company from Singapore and a company from Denmark.
I'm undecided on this issue, trying to gather more information on how this would actually affect operations in ports.

There's some analysis for you. I'm currently reading it and trying to figure out what my opinion is. My gut reaction was to say "This is a bad idea, giving control of these ports to a foreign country!" but then I found out the control of those ports was already in the hands of a foreign country, and that the problem with port security is that it is under- or un-funded by the goverment despite serious calls from all sides for the government to make good on its promise to protect our ports.

Aye but don't you think political context also comes into play?
On one hand you're citing a company based in UK, a close US ally
(though I would still disapprove as the company also is private - and foreign)
On the other we've got a company based in a country which has "several 9-11 connections [...] Many of the hijackers entered the U.S. via UAE, much of the attack's planning was done there, and the FBI says money for the operation was transferred to the hijackers primarily through the UAE's banking system."
I say that's quite an impressive criminal record http://www.smilies-world.de/smilies...ure/engel/4.gif
