Current AMD 64 Cpu Selection

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Anyone have any experience with the 939 cpu selection?

Want to do a build with an Opteron - not sure if I should go with an Athlon 64 instead. The Opteron does have that 1 mb of L2 cache though *drool*

can't afford the X2's or FX's.

Anything wrong with the Opteron?

Just getting your thoughts.

I'm from South Africa and we've got Rands, I've got the Amd64 3000+. i'm very happy with it. However if i knew there would be dual cores i would have waited before buying my pc, let's say you go for the 3800+ Amd64 Athlon, you can just aswell save your money for a little while longer and go for the AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ Dual Core Socket 939 CPU. Over here it's just a few rands more than the single core 3800+. Be wise, save a bit longer and go for dual core!

Exactly why I chose a board with x2 and FX compatibility
Got to wait for the price to drop..

What the - you need registered RAM for the Opteron?? That makes things a little more expensive.... Huh

Opteron = server chip
Athlon64 = desktop

1 gb registered PC3200 is like $300 right there! no way.

Guess I'm going Athlon64

I have 2 Athlon 64. The one in my sig. And a 3000+. 754 Clawhammer on a Epox 8NPA SLI mobo. And even the Claw runs fast as hell, since I o.c:ed it to 2.4 GHz.

So you wont be dissatisfied with a Athlon either.

I hear dual cores aren't really that good for gaming because games don't support dual cores.

Yeah, you need to manualy set a core to the specified game.

The dual cores, have it's strength in multitasking. In games, they are as good as single cores. At least until the multitreaded games starts to come. Then we will see the dual cores, begin to get really interesting. But that will take some time before it happends.

O.K. I meant, that it will take a while, before multitreaded games will be common stuff.

true, it seems to be taking a painfully long time

Yeah, I guess, that the game manufacturers, is waiting and watching to see, how this "dual core boom" developes.

man, i dont really like my dual core, when i play Counter Strike 1.6 , its like built in speed hacks. I would need to disable a core to start playing older games, but for the newer stuff this processor rocks.
