How About Tech Staff

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: forbidden14eva

We hav Super mod ,Admin and Moderators...Why dont we have Tech Staff...so tht they can do all the Technical Things ......And all others like Super Mod help them....

so how do u like the IDEA Admins?

Posted by: sislaen

that would be cool...

Posted by: AltronHGX

No.

Because the first word of the site URL, "Open", means it's anyone who has any knowledge whatsoever that can lend a hand to a person.

To start giving "Tech Staff" titles would render the site's original purpose pointless.

do what technical things? this is a forum, not a repair shop.

Anyone who knows the answer to any question asked can answer that question. That's how this site works.

Having an official "tech staff" would just be silly and pointless. Every one of us is on the "tech staff" every time we answer a question.

as u wish guys... it was just a Suggestion

Thanks very much for the suggestion.

We considered putting specific "tech" titles before, but it seems to cause more problems and misunderstandings. It seems to give off the vibe that some people were better than others, and that is not what this site wants to happen. We want everyone to be looked upon equally. This is a volunteer-driven site and everyone has to have equal weight when posting their views, unless they're part of the staff that runs this site.

Unless we go out and actually pay someone to answer questions (which is highly unlikely considering we're not-for-profit), putting a title on someone would just make it appear that he is better or more knowledgeable than everyone else. That may be true or not, but the last time I saw a site doing this, some members targetted the poor guy and demanded his answers instead of those from the other members. Quotes like "Hey, you're tech staff, aren't you? Answer my question!" or "I'm sorry, but I need someone from the tech staff to answer my question, please..."

I know, it seems a bit pessimistic and cynical, but it's happened before, and I've been running this site long enough to know that it's very possible here, too. I think you can agree with me from some of the replies you got, haha...

But thanks again for the suggestion. Once I get around to updating the forum script, I'll be putting in "thank you" points for the support forums so that "truly" helpful people can get recognition they deserve and maybe receive some perks.

Thanks for being a member, forbidden14eva, and don't hesitate to post other questions you may have.

hey i could be off, but i think what hes saying is what if the advice we give is wrong? what if a novice - or deviant gave bad info and ruined the persons computer by that advice. and with a tech support title a total noob can be 99% sure(not 100% kuz well you know noone uses 100%'s no more) the info he gets is correct.

am i rite thread starter?

Posted by: Canis Lupus

The nature of a volunteer site like this one is that "anyone" can share what they know... if only a handful of people get labelled with a "tech support title" then people will only trust their replies.

Here's a scenario:

Topic Starter: Hey, I need help with my PS2. How do I reset the password?
Volunteer 1: Hey there, that's easy. You just enter 7444 and then type your new password
Topic Starter: Cool, thanks *topic starter then sees that the one who answered didn't have a tech title*
Topic Starter: Can someone with a tech title please answer my question so I can be sure?

Or the more common one:

Topic title: Help with my Windows XP Problem. Tech Staff only, please!

And I have actually seen this happen in other tech forums, too. If people begin to only trust a handful of people with an honorary title, how will the rest of us ordinary people be able to share what we know?

very true, i never thought of it like that

also just because someone has the tech support title, doesn't mean their answer will always be right.
For instance I just started a job in tech support but I would hardly say I could answer all the questions that the team I'm in has been getting, and I think the same applies here.
