After reinstalling WINXP, my computer detected a Video Controller (VGA Compatible)... I want to install a driver for this but i cant see the manufacturer brand's name.. Plese help me show the name of the hardware.. And one other thing, my DirectDraw and Direct3D arent available when i ran DXDIAG... How can i enable them? Thanks much..

You need to install your Graphics Driver, it's pretty useless asking us, what brand or manufacturer Graphics Chip/Card your've got. The best thing to do, is look in your motherboard manual, if you've got onboard graphics and or open the pc and look at the graphics card, write down what it says and post it here. Nvidia, ATi etc.

Oh, ok thanks man..

but is that possible? Howcome my audio and other controller devices didnt needed an update?.. Thanks again..

Pleasure, I don't mean to be rude. You need to know what hardware your pc has, always.

It all depens on what hardware windows can recognise (Windows Xp supports alot, but not all hardware)
It's not that hard, open up your pc, check if it's card you get your graphics from, or onboard (on the motherboard)

Yeah... Hehe.. I dont ALWAYS open my pillar you see... Thanks again.. If i have questions about my hardware and their drivers, i'll just post them here right?... Thanks for reminding..

If you need to know what a certain hardware in your rig is? Then download this diagnostic software:

Hey guys... Another problem... I used my computer last night after i logged off here.. Before opening my tower/pillar... It was fine.. Then i shut it down.. This morning, i tried to boot it up but it wont, after the WINDOWS XP logo, it goes black.. So i tried to check the disk using the REPAIR installation option of the os installer.. But it said that "the drive has one or more unrecoverable files"... I exited the recovery part and rebooted.. I thought that if i remove the OS installer before booting, i could start windows through safe mode but while booting, it said, "NTDLR missing, press any key to continue"... So i thought of reinstalling WINXP again(i think its the 3rd time this week) but when i try to install a fresh installation, the partitions present are an 8MB partition(maybe for the virtual mem) and a C:/PARTITION... The last time i saw this part, the C:/ partition has a nam "C:/WINDOWSXP Professional" or something like that.. Could i have accidentaly deleted my files? Windows also said that the volume drive has one or more unrecoverable files.. Should i use a boot disk? but i cant open windows... What should i do to complete a boot so that i can reach the desktop?.. I always get problems.. Anyone please help..

Load the windows xp cd again, choose the option to load the recovery console (watch the screen closely and press the button that starts the recovery console), follow the onscreen steps, for admin password just press enter if you haven't got one. Type in chkdsk /f and press enter, type it in exactly as I did. Wait for checkdisk to complete, first see if you can boot into windows after the checkdisk has completed, it will take quite a while to checkdisk, depending on hard disk size.
If you still can't access windows, try the repair install option again. If it still doesn't work/
You need to get another hard drive and load windows on it and backup all your files onto the hard drive, you made a huge mistake by choosing repair install IMO, repair install, reinstalls windows and does not check your disk.

can you explain how to copy my files from my original hard drive onto the new one using recovery console or DOS?.. I just cant start windows.. Maybe the hal.dll file is damaged or something...
Posted by: altorn
in the recovery console, it doesnt show "1 C:\WINDOWS" so i cant repair it.. I tried chkdsk, but the serial number became 0000-0000 and there are some unrecoverable files... I just need to copy my files onto another HDD or burn it to some CDs so that i can go on with the reformatting stuff... man..

If it doesn't show your windows directory you're pretty screwed, type in dir and press enter, see if your folders are there, type in
cd "folder name" (without " to access the specific folder and dir to view files.)
check out http://www.computerhope.com/xcopyhlp.htm#04
This should work
It's better to install xp on the other hard drive and see if you can recover your files.

recovery program that can recover files from a formatted drive? Does that mean i could reformat my HDD then recover my files again?
Posted by: goranpaa
I think Teraside means, that you should install XP on the the drive that you did'nt use for Windows before. And then use a recovery program, to to try to recover the files you lost.
Here is a free recovery program for you.
http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/filerecovery.html
But there's no guaratee, that you can recover everything.

of course not. any recovery would be limited.
Posted by: altorn
howcome when i try to copy a "hal.dll" from the XP CD to "C:\windowsroot\system32\" via Recovery Console, it says "Access denied"... Another thing, i tried to "bootcfg/rebuild" or another command, the recovey console says "The system's registry doesnt have an ACTIVE CONTROLSET key"..

but can i reformat the c:\, then install winxp again(a very fresh install), then install a file recovery software, then recover my files?
Posted by: redwench
not likely
Posted by: altorn
Why NOT LIKELY? but can i open my HD via another working computer, then copy all my important files, then reformat my HD?.. What if that computer(with same config) cant access my HD?

Are you insane? Get another hard drive, put it in your pc, install xp on it, use a recovery software to get your files back, don't use an entire pc to do it, just a hard drive. Buy yourself an extra 40 GB or 80 GB hard drive, they are cheap these days.
Posted by: altorn
Ah, let me recap, i put another HD, open my computer and install WINXP on the new partition(new HD), then install a FILERECOVERY program on that drive, then use that program to recover the files from my first HD?..
Posted by: teraside
YES! Bravo, buy yourself a new hard drive, they are cheap

because file recovery programs, in spite of their claims, do not recover all files, and at times cannot recover any. they are a last resort, not part of the plan.

then for all practical purposes, your files or partition table have blown up.
