Does anyone have any good suggestions for a recent, Linux friendly graphics card? (ie, not ATI) Nvidia is a nice cbrand because they have good Linux support.

Hi! It really more of a question of the driver OS support, than the videocard brand itself. And there are many manufacturers of both ATI And Nvidia (Geforce) cards, that have more or less support in their drivers for different OS. But as you seemed to have decided to go for Geforce. What videocard interface do you got? AGP or PCI Express?

And how much money are you prepaired to shell out for a good videocard? And how powerful are your PC? CPU? Type of RAM, max RAM speed supported by mobo and amount? and motherboard?

One suggestion, is Geforce 6800GS, that you can get in both AGP or PCI Express. Around 180 to 200 bucks.

If you want something better than that? Then 7800GS (AGP only) or 7800GT / GTX ( PCI Express only) would be the choise.

The cheapest, modern Nvidia videocard that is really good is Geforce 6600GT. (AGP and PCI Express).

But have in mind, that you will be needing a powersupply, absloute minimum 350W and of good quality (For 6600GT and 6800GS). But a 350W PSU, wont leave any power for more hardware upgrades.

As for the 7800 cards, you will be looking at 420W minimum. The best way if you feel you must upgrade the powersupply, is to get a 500W PSU. This way, you have all the power you need for future upgrades.

Here are some good PSU:s: Aspire, Antec, Enermax, E-power ( Tagan), Hiper, Silverstone and PC Power & cooling for ex.

Really nvidia is your only choice. Matrox has great driver support as well but they aren't too competitive when it comes to performance. So if you dual boot because you play games on windows, then you want nvidia.

If you don't play games, any low end nvidia or matrox card will do.
