I was wondering if anyone could help me with determining which processes listed in the task manager can be terminated?? I can recognize some of the basics, like Explorer and Outlook, but there's a whole big list of things loaded, and my computer is rather slow, so I'd like to kill those processes that I am not currently using. Also, how do I change what is loaded into memory on Start-up? How do those things load if I never open them??
Thanks a bunch!!

Try going to Start=>Run=>"msconfig" (without the quotes). From there you can click on the "startup" tab and it'll give you a list of programs that load when your computer boots up. If you uncheck one, that program won't load during boot up.
Remember to be careful and do a little research into what programs you're terminating to make sure you don't cause your system to run unstable.

google all running processes, kill the ones you dont need.

Here is a list of a few processes you SHOULD NOT terminate:
cidaemon.exe
cisvc.exe
ctfmon.exe
explorer.exe
keyhook.exe
lsass.exe
rundll32.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe
winlogon.exe
System
System Idle Process
Also, don't terminate things that say "SYSTEM" under the user column.
These arent all the ones you shouldn't terminate, just a few that I know.
If you're worried about security, you can download this thing called Security Task Manager.
