Second harddrive slows down PC

On my Dell Dimension 4600 with Maxtor 80GB harddrive ( 7200 rpm) I have installed a second harddrive, Maxtor 300GB (7200 rpm). The small drive remains 'Master' and has WindowsXP+SP2 on it. It has not been formatted. The larger drive is 'slave' and I have also installed Windows XP+SP2 on it. The PC is normally started up via Windows XP on the larger drive.
This start-up procedure takes considerably longer than it used to do with the smaller drive. The blue dot that travels back and forth during strat-up often pauses for several seconds and after that picture has disappeared the screen stays black for quite some time.
All the programmes I use have been installed on the same (=300 GB) drive as Windows XP. But it reads them very slowly. I cannot use Pinnacle Studio 9 because the editing of the different scenes is too slow.
What is the reason of this and what should be the remedy? Reinstalling Windows is very unattractive for me, but if I did would the speed then have improved considerably?
With only the 80GB drive I could edit videos without problem using Pinnacle Studio 7.
Grateful for Your suggestions !!

unless you have a compelling need for 2 versions of the same OS, ditch one. make the windows drive the master, and turn off file indexing.
