uninstall issues
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I recently bought an old (new to me) computer, running Windows 2000 Professional. I've spent weeks cleaning up the most amazing mess of a system. It's going pretty well at this point (it's a miracle after what was living in this box), but there are still so many issues with it, including the following...
1) There were programs on here (i.e. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Works) that are not viable but that I cannot seem to uninstall. (Just as an aside, I don't want them.) For instance, Microsoft OFfice is not in Add/Remove programs (nor is it in Start Menu/Programs) but it is taking up a whole bunch of space in Program Files. I have tried everything, short of just manually deleting the folder (which probably is not very wise). I've tried everything - I've been using Advanced Uninstaller Pro (which is going to run out of trial time tomorrow) to help me with overall cleaning, etc. and it's got a great uninstall feature (including a "forced removal") except that Office doesn't even come up in their list of programs installed so I can't even force it to leave. How can I get rid of this (and the other pesky programs that won't go away), including Microsoft Office Tools (which does appear in Start Menu but not in Add/Remove programs or anywhere else besides Program Files, and Microsoft Works programs here and there? I'd love to free up the space but don't want to mess anything up by just removing anything manually. Oh, I have no disks for any of these, or for anything else on the system for that matter.
2) Although IE6 is installed and when I look at Help/About it says Version 6.0...Update Versions: SP1, Q..... and so on, it's behaving as if SP1 has NOT been installed. Internet Explorer does not seem to be in Add/Remove programs. There is only one reference to IE, and that is "Internet Explorer Q903235." This is the one single reference to IE anywhere on the list. Anyway, when I try to install updates to IE6 SP1 it won't let me, saying I need to have IE6 SP1 installed first. So....then I try to do that, thinking I'll just install it since it's behaving as if it's not there, but then I'm told I already have it and that I really ought to exit setup. What can I do about this? Should I completely reinstall IE6 and then IE6 SP1, reinstalled over what's already installed? Or if I just try to install IE6 SP1, and instead of exiting setup choose to reinstall, will I lose any data (Outlook Express email being what I absolutely cannot afford to lose). I don't know which way to go with this. I can't even "repair" or remove IE...or go back to some former configuration...because it's another program that's not showing up in Add/Remove Programs.
Hope this all makes sense. It's making me wacky.
Thanks so much - I'll be back with the hundreds of other issues I have with this computer next time. Wow, they should have paid ME to take this computer.
If it's relevant, I connect with cable.
Best,
Pamela

Are you running service pack 4 & have you got the latest updates since then?
If Office isn't appearing in add/ remove programs & doesn't show up anywhere else, you should be safe to just delete the folder from Program Files.
IE wouldn't appear in add/remove programs unless you go too the add/remove Windows components, it should appear in there.
Wouldn't it have been easier to do a fresh install of Windows 2000, instead of trying to remove programs that you don't want. You may be just putting of the inevitable anyway.

Thanks, Kestrel
Yes, I'm running SP 4, have all the latest updates, and I can't fresh install Windows because I don't have disks.
Yes, IE and Outlook Express are in Windows Components, they're both checked, but it just says 0.0 mb for both of them. Nothing changes when I highlight them, no details, no information whatsoever. There's definitely something screwy with it. Can I just install IE 6 SP1 over whatever I have on here, as is, without uninstalling something (which I can't do anyway)? And if I do this, will I lose email in OE?

Yes you should be OK just to install IE6 SP1 over the top, but if something is setup wrong in IE it may just continue. Uncheck the tick boxes & this should remove IE & outlook express. Unfortunatly this still may not sort out the problem because the registry will still hold certain information relating to IE.
You may be able to create the Windows 2000 install CD, if you have a folder on the harddrive labeled i386. Have a look & I will let you know what to do.

Go to Majorgeeks and get Regcleaner and run this after you've deleted the Office folder and it should remove all the errant registry entries that might be left over. Using a program like this it's easy to remove the uninstall option whilst leaving the program resident which prevents people accidentally uninstalling it which can be useful if you don't want to deal with idiot support calls.

I'm going to try just installing it over the top, kestrel, but can you let me know if this means I'll lose all email in OE? If that's the case I'll have to save it all, and that would be a whole nuther thing. I don't want to do the install until I know this for sure.
Thanks for your help, Pamela

Thanks for reminding me about this program - I used to use it all the time, but forgot about it moving homes/computers, etc. I've been using ccleaner but regcleaner should really do the job.
Thanks, Pamela

No you shouldn't loose anything on OE, but you could back it up anyway.
If you open outlook express & go to, Tools - Options Then click on the maintenance tab you will see a button called 'store foder'. Click on that & note the location of your OE's store folder. If you then browse to that location you can just copy the folder to a safe location. That will save all of your email folders, that you can import if anything goes wrong. The address book needs to be done seperately. If you go to file - export in OE you will get the option to export your address book as a file.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Hi,
I did an install of IE6 SP1 and it all went fine, I didn't lose anything. However, it's not being acknowledged (OE, more specifically...I think IE is okay). I know this because I tried to download a security update for OE, and it told me I had to have OE SP1 installed. This is the issue, I think...for some reason, it's as if the system is not acknowledging its presence even. The OE files (that it places in My Documents...where Store Folder puts them) are not associated with any file types. I know they're dbx files?.....but something's obviously going on with that.
Everything is working okay, so maybe I should just let it go, but I'd like to be able to update all of this when I need to, so of course it would be better to fix it. I can't apply any critical updates...
If you have any ideas about where I could look around to see what exactly the problem is, I'd really appreciate.
Thanks so much...and is this a UK site? It's funny...I just got back from 8 months in the UK (I'm in the states now), and that's where you're both from. I miss East Enders.
