The expence of pc gaming

As not to offend anybody let me just start by saying i am quiet ignorant to pc gaming, which is why i am asking the following. What makes pc games worth the huge expense of building a dedicated rig? I haven't played any of the newer games but i played diablo and warcraft a few times years ago to pass the time in my drafting class and i was never really impressed enough to go any further. I have been curious (mostly since joining this forum) about what makes them so much better then just buying an x box or playstation. I know that there are certain games that are only available for pc but are they really that much better than a console game?

I think that pc games and console gaming are up to the people who play it. Some people prefer pc gaming and some people love both.

I have played console video games, since the first Nintendo came out. And all the way to PS 2. (I have played some Xbox games later on too on a friends box. But I never did feel, it could quite compaire to gaming on the PC). When I did build my first real "Gaming PC", I realized that gaming on PC, have soo much more to offer you. Especially graphics vice. And I dont think that there are many gamers, that does'nt wanna be able to have the best graphics possible. After all, the better graphics the more satisfying and fun the gaming will be.

The game consoles of today are good. But still limited, compaired to a PC, when it comes to gaming.

And often, as a side effect of gaming on a PC. You starts to get interested in the PC itself, and the technical aspects of it.
Just look at me lol. And probably at least 95% of all people in this forum.

The downside, is of coarce the cost of building a good gaming PC. And that it is almost impossible too keep up with the "hardware rat race", if you dont have the echonomy of a oil sheijk. Or are prepaired to live on water and noodles for a while lol. Especially on the videocard side. What's the top videocard of today, is pretty obsolete in about a year.

I like both, however, I'm not buying any of these next-gen consoles simple because of the cost, and how many problems the systems have. My PS2's laser head finally went out last month, and I got it on launch, but most people had a problem after one year.

Here's an example of what I mean by cost... I was debating getting an XBox 360 for Oblivion, and instead got a new video card that could handle it (graphics aren't a huge deal to me), for far less than the cost of an XBox 360.

Also, modding. You can get mods and patches to improve/fix games for PC, which you can't always do with console games. Although, now with consoles going online, that's not such a valid argument for PC over console. Most games I play for console, are released for PC.

But as goranpaa said, graphics. For those who care about them, games will look graphically better on PC than they will on console. But of course, as he mentioned, then you might be trying to upgrade your PC constantly. But for me, that's not a big deal, since any upgrades I spend on my PC will have a dual purpose, as I use my PC for media editing and such.

So really, it's up to each person to weigh their choices. The one thing that I like from consoles, is that it makes gaming parties so much easier. Rather than havin' yer friends bring their boxes, you just have them bring their controllers. Haha.

Honestly, i've never been able to understand the hype of console games. correct me if i'm wrong, but anything that has come out on console has been bettered by PC? As was said earlier price wise (comparing pc upgrades to buying a new console) aint much different anymore. And buying a PC game is alot cheaper than console games.

I just feel that a console limits you down dramatically. sure, playing a game like need for speed is easy enough, but trying to come up with the right combination of buttons for a game like call of duty would drive me crazy.

Just 3 words for you man. Grand Theft Auto.(well not the first two)
Its impossible to get the same GTA feeling you have when playing on PS2 on PC.
Quite frankly all FPS and Strategy and rpg games are better on PC. One hell of a lot better. But you dont get the right feeling playing sport-games and driving games on pc.
Well, thats my opinion..

Not at least, if you dont have a really big monitor and a nice steering weel.

Personally I like my PC for running emulaters, and it does that very well, so in that sense it bests consoles.

I just like the vast amount of options you can choose from on the pc versus a consol. You can do much much more on pc games than consol games.

Thanks for all the replies. I have almost always been more involved with driving and racing games myself. I can see why rpg's would be better played on a pc now as well, i never took into consideration the amount of buttons, the most i ussually use are clutch, shifter, gas and 2 brakes so not much an issue in my experience.

I have been avoiding pc gaming for exactly the reasons that goranpa pointed out about the rat race, and i can compare it to my obsession with cars. I have spent more than i care to say building hot rods and modifying suspensions out of either pride or direct competition to a point that someone who isnt into cars would never understand. I have found myself "bench racing" about pc stats several times lately and can see how addictive it can be. With my console games i turn them on and i go, maybe adjust the brightness on the tv a little. But it seems pc games do offer more in the way of a hobby. There is always somthing you can do to make it better or faster and for sure a lot more to talk about.
