.dll file not found, windows 98 gone

I am new to all of this. This is what happened today:

I installed and then reinstalled the new hotmail beta program -- no problems (so it appeared).

But then internet explorer (6) keep quiting on me. I blindly followed Windows error message advice and I did this:

Restarted in MS DOS mode

Rename:\Windows\System\Msvcrt.dll Msvcrt.old

Copy:\Msvcrt.dll C:\Windows\System

THEN I restarted and I get this error message -- A required .dll file c:\Windows\System\Msvcrt.dll not found

error loading explorer.exe reinstall Windows

I don't have a CD of my Windows 98.

Help! and please keep it simple!

It is possible to fix this without reinstalling windows, but you will need a windows 98 CD. The only way to fix this without a CD is to go on the internet and download the DLL file, but that would require you to be able to boot up normally or in safe mode.

Or there is another option. You will not require a 98 disk, but you will need another computer, a CD burner, and a CD-R. What you are going to do is download a new copy of Msvcrt.dll from:
http://dll-downloads.com/hosts.asp?msvcrt.zip
Then, you are going to burn it onto the CD at the top directory:
< DRIVE>\Msvcrt.dll
Where <DRIVE> is the letter of the drive that the CD is in. Then, put the newly burned CD in your computer. You are going to copy the DLL file from the CD to your hard disk by entering this command into DOS:
Copy: <DRIVE>\Msvcrt.dll C:\Windows\System
Once again, <DRIVE> is the letter of the drive the CD is in. Now reboot, and Windows should load.

I know this is a little complex, but it should work.

When it boots, press F8 and choose Safe Mode Command Prompt. At the prompt, type:

cd \windows\system
copy msvcrt.old msvcrt.dll

That will restore the old copy and you'll just be back to where you were, but it'll at least boot to Windows again.
