Hello.

I hope someone can help me. I've read a lot of different threads about theories on what programs can conflict and cause issues, etc., etc., but I hope someone can look at my HiJack This Logfile and give me an idea..

Whenever I run programs like iTunes (specifically while importing music from a CD), I see my CPU usage go up to 100%! Sometimes my laptop (Averatec 3270) stays on, but most of the times it will just go out completely -- no noise, no effects, just completely off.

I have ZoneAlarm, and heard it can cause conflicts..

Anyhow, here is my logfile. PLEASE help:

It looks to me like you are trying to run an awful lot of things at once. I use Rhapsody (from RealNetworks) to download music and have had similar problems in the past while trying to run it. In my case it was with a Sempron 2200+ previously and now with a system based on an Athlon 3800+ dual core. For some reason music downloading programs have a nasty habit of taking more processing power than they really need. My suggestion would be to use the MSCONFIG in the "run" box and to start as few programs in the STARTUP as possible. This was the suggestion made to me by Rhapsody and it works. Keep your antivirus and/or firewall running but nothing else and see if that makes a difference. If not, try part 2 of my response!

Part 2) Try using McAfee instead of Syamntec's Norton Antivirus. Both of my mobos came with Norton, so I initially tried it with my first mobo, but it caused my system to slow way way down. It may not be ITunes that is the problem. I switched to using McAfee after I discovered that it came free from my internet service provider. I haven't had major headaches with my 'net connection since, so I suggest finding out if your ISP provides it.

Thanks very much for the prompt reply.

I guess I should stress that I don't think it is iTunes that is causing the sudden shut-downs. It happens while using Norton to scan for threats, and I've seen it happen while running other things as well, but cannot recall at the moment.

I want to regulate how many programs run at once, but am a bit scared about which ones I should switch-off..

Any suggestions in that realm to start would be greatly appreciated as well.. Assume I'm an idiot, because in the computer world I basically am..

I would suggest clearing all the boxes listed in the STARTUP tab except for any that a have "Norton" or "Symantec" in the command line.

Click start, then selct run, type MSCONFIG in the dialog box and hit enter. Then click the tab marked "startup" within that program. You will need to expand the width a bit by hovering your mouse pointer near where command and location separate and then click and drag it to the right a bit when it turns into an arrow. Then clear the boxes next to anything that doesn't say either "Norton" or "Symantec" in the command line. Click OK and choose "restart."
After the computer reboots another box will open telling you all sorts of stuff about the configuration editor being used. You will click the checkbox so it's selected and click OK. Then try running ITunes or any other program you've been having problems with to see how it does.
I know it sounds scary, but sometimes it's best to learn by doing. You won't be actually changing any of the things listed as "processes" for the operation of Windows itself. Just reducing the number of programs that automatically start themselves at bootup.

By the way, we were all computer illiterate at one time or another. Most of us are here because we wanted help from someone without having to pay $90/ hour to someone who only makes $12/ hour at some computer store.

I doubt it is a problem with the Sempron, because I can run a ton of things at once with mine, and I've even seen gaming rigs built with Semprons.

Apple has a nasty habbit of writing bad programs for windows (this would make sense), an I have heard storys of iTunes screwing up peoples computers. Try Rhapsody, it is much better.

And if you have a lot of programs at startup, do a virus/malware scan to check for malicious activity, and download Startup Control Pannel (free) to help remove unnecessary programs. Also, run a registry cleaner (I use TweakNow Standard, free).

And finaly, Norton has a big reputation of greatly slowing down PCs, use McAfee instead (if comcast is your ISP, its free) or another free one like AVG.

Posted by: pdnielsen

If Verizon or AOL is your ISP, they provide McAfee as well.

Rhapsody also has problems from time to time with running a lot of stuff at once with it, but the ITunes customers I've talked to say Itunes is a lot worse. Like Matt.modica said, it's also not likely that your CPU is the problem. (I used a Sempron 2200 for quite some time and I would not be giving it to one of my best friends from college if it were trouble.)

Rhapsody allows you to download just as much music as ITunes and perhaps even more, but costs just $10/ month for unlimited downloads. You can try it for a shorter free trial if you want too. Just go to this website:

www.listen.com

Posted by: pdnielsen

I also forgot I was going to give you the website for 2 other antivirus programs that are free. One is AVG Free and the other Avast. Both are very good and don't slow PCs nearly as much Norton. No make that ANYWHERE near as much as Norton.

www.grisoft.com (for AVG Free. Just if you use this you may want to deactivate the automatic scan. Directions on how to do that are included in the program.)

www.avast.com (for Avast, which also includes a firewall program. I forget whether it comes with the firewall for free as well as the antivirus or whether you need to buy the firewall separately.)

Thanks so much for the information.

So far, no changes yet, though..

It seems that when I try to import (rip) songs from a CD into iTunes it nearly always crashes.. Burning discs isn't a problem..

THen the other night I was watching a short movie clip online which a friend sent me a link to, and my machine just shuts-off.. instant black screen.. instant silence.

I can't figure it out.

Any other suggestions at all of what to try?

Posted by: matt.modica

Unless you have an iPod and HAVE to use iTunes, I wouldn't use that, because it isn't a very well writen program (at least the Windows version) and many people have had trouble with it in the past. As for the computer just shuting off, that sounds a lot like overheating, where the computer just shuts down suddenly to avoid heat damage. Check your fans and cooling system.

Posted by: goranpaa

I would also like to add, that running all that stuff with "just" 512mb of RAM, may contribute to the shutdown problem. But I guess the main cause(s) is the things the guys above points out.

SIS Sandra, diagnostic software, have an excellent "fine tune module". That will help you find out what services is safe to shut down. Windows XP is full of such stuff.

Posted by: TruBlu

Aggh!

Still crashing.

Not every time I run it, but every few days or so..

Again, it's in no way isolated to iTunes. There seems to be a pattern with watching stuff on Real Player too.

I'm starting to wonder if it's an overheat of some sort, reading about that in other threads.. It does seem to get quite hot after a while, but I'm always careful about not blocking the fan so it can ventilate well, etc.

This just sucks.

Thanks.

Any link in particular?

Posted by: goranpaa

Here is a download link for SIS Sandra:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System...re-Sandra.shtml

Also download "Motherboard Monitor 5" And take a look at the temperatures:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System...d-Monitor.shtml

Posted by: pdnielsen

I was curious about the Motherboard monitor you mention, goranpaa, so I tried downloading it. Why is it that none of this software seems to recognize the Giga-byte GA-K8U-939 exsists? Even Crucial's memory scanner doesn't recognize it in the model number list. I keep having to fake out such software by trying listing it as another K8 Triton mobo.
