Laptop not detecting battery

I have a Toshiba laptop, and I just got a new Li-Ion battery a few days ago. Everything was working fine until yesterday. Yesterday, when I pulled the AC out to switch to battery power, my laptop said that I was still using 100% AC. I tried restarting my computer, but it still said the same thing afterwards. I also tried switching to my old battery, which still has a little charge, and my computer still couldn't detect the battery. The LED light that glows when my laptop is using the battery is also not appearing. My laptop can still work on battery, but I'm thinking that either the software or the circuitry is messed up. I hope it's not the latter. Any thoughts on this? What should I do?

Have you tried to reinstall the software and cleaned the battery compartment?
Othervice, I would say that's probably a hardware problem of some kind.

Okay, well everything seems to be working now. I just let the computer run on the battery until it shut off. When I turned the computer back on with the AC, the fuel gauge said 72% power remaining, and I believe that was how much power I had left before my computer stopped detecting the battery. Then the fuel gauge stopped at 99% for the longest time, and it finally went to 100% when the battery was full. Now I'm discharging the battery again to see if the fuel gauge will go down correctly, and it seems like it is. I guess the computer has had a hard time calibrating with the new battery?

Try this: completly shut down windows (not hibernating), then pull the AC plug from the laptop and then remove the battery for about 10 minutes. Then, put the battery back in, and boot up on battery power and see if that fixes it. Also, try flashing the BIOS, the problem might be there.
