Athlon 2400 XP Problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I built this system:
-Athlon 2400 XP 2.13Ghz
-Pc Chips Motherboard 333
-1G 3200 Kingston ram
-400 Watt Supply
-2 HDD's 120G total
-2 DVD drives

In the BIOS i set the motherboard to 166Mhz because that was the suggested speed for all my hardware. It works fine for a while untill you try to do anything heavythen it just goes black and reboots. i set it back down to 100Mhz and the pc works great but the prossesor only runs at 1.25 Ghz and calles its self an Athlon XP. I got the offical AMD clock and it says 1300Mhz. What could cause this. The PC works but i dont think im gettin all the Ghz i paid for

sounds like overheating

I would replace the Athlon XP (since its an older chip, and your other hardware is newer) for any Athlon 64 thats between 3000+ to 4000+. Also check to make sure the fans are all working properly. I am not farmilliar with the motherboard, but if its older, then the overheating would be caused by the higher clock of the FSB, and the underclocked processor would be a result of lowering the FSB.

Did you take the tape off the pad on the CPU before you put the fan on? and it will run at a slower clock speed if its slowed down to 100 fsb

Do you have more than just the fan on your CPU? It sounds to me like an overheating problem too, but having just 1 more fan can sometimes fix that.

I would also suggest replacing the CPU if it turns out you don't have cooling problems. Just be sure that your new CPU matches your mobo socket and frequency - new CPUs generally cost more than new mobos. If you make a mistake and buy the wrong processor you might find yourself building most of a whole new computer!

Round cables might make a difference too. I gave my older Sempron to my college bud and it ran 5 degrees cooler with the extra space for the air to move through.
