My friend has a Dell Inspiron 6000. Good laptop but within the last 2 months it takes like a good 10 mins to fully start and load. All Dell reccommend is to format but he doesn't want to do that! Since here is one of the best places to come with problems like this I decided to ask! Are there any reasons for this to happen?? What are the usual causes of the really slow start? Confliction? Corrupt program? Too much porn!!! (joking)!! Could be be the network card serching for a network?? Too many start up programs?? We need help with this otherwise as last resort we'll have to re-format it!
Cheers guys!

could be a variety of stuff. if its gotten that bad, i would take dell's advice. but if you really want to do it the hard way, go through the start up programs and services, run a registry cleaner, and a variety of malware scans.

Agree to the above.
Also do a defragmentation of the hd, could be a good thing.

Can't a defragmentation cause problems also?? I'll do a disk cleanup. I stopped a lot of start up programs there now and freed up some space! Will free up more with this now and see but I defragmented my HD and got problems so bad that I had to re-format which I hate doing!
Cheers guys!

No, on the contrary. It will often speed up the hd performance some.
And defragging the hd, should'nt cause any problems. Then there is something else that is wrong.

You may wanna do a checkup on your HDs health?

Defragmenting is not like using partitioning software to manage partitions, its not risky at all, there is no need to back up data before, and should be part of routine computer maintance, just like virus scans, registry cleanings, and data backup.

msconfig ftw. start > run > msconfig > startup > disable all > restart.

k..
i'd check my autoexec / config file, clear out the crap.
then go through registry / startup files, only leave the bare essentials.
when removing reg files, export the values your removing, that way, if it's not that value, you can restore it.
i'd do a virus / spyware scan.
also c that your not running out of disk space. do a scandisk / defrag.
you could try booting of ur xp cd, and in command line repair, do a chkdsk.
loaded anything funny just before this started?

all the registry cleaners will do this for you

In order -
Spyware/Antivirus scan and removal
Uninstall unecessary programs
Use MSconfig to disable any startup items you don't require
Run a hard disk cleaner to clear out rubbish
Run a registry cleaner to remove invalid entries
Run the defragmenter to optimise your HD

I wouldn't disable all of them, because some of them are needed by Windows. To manage startup items, both file and registry items, use startup control panel.

what sort of firewall do you have? because back when I had norton personal firewall it really slowed by computer's boot time to a crawl. so you that may be your problem if you have norton, but if not, then take the advice of the posts above
