Im currently looking for a socket 939 motherboard and a case. So far i am looking at the cases and motherboards on newegg. I plan to purchase a 3200. My budget is around 300 or a little higher. If anyone has any suggestions please post them. This is also going to be my first build.

How about the
EPoX EP-9NPA3ULTRA Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra $85.00
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ $154
are these any good?

I also want a pci E mobo (forgot to add)

Posted by: goranpaa

Do you want an AGP mobo? A good PSU?

Posted by: khmerxkid781

i think that im going to need a new psu for the video upgrade + a stick of 512.
500 dollars in total should be pretty fine.

i have decided to choose
EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail $94.00

COOLER MASTER Real Power RS-450-ACLX ATX12V 450W Power Supply Nemko / TUV / cUL / CE / BSMI - Retail $59.99

which is a total of 392 not with shipping. Pretty good price. Im not sure about the case yet. I have like 5 HD that are pretty old, like 3-4 years. It should work fine, also the cd drives/ floppy. I think that im all set. I plan on purchasing the video card around christmas. Am i missing anything else?

Thanks a lot!!

Posted by: goranpaa

That is totally o.k. And I think you got it all. And take your time finding a suitable case. Just choose one that is big and have lots of fan mounts and you be fine.

You're welcome

Posted by: goranpaa

And if you are going to buy the card around Christmas? Then maybe the new Geforce cards, that supports Direct X 10 have arrived. And I guess that the 7800 cards have dropped some in price by then. Could be something to consider maybe?

Posted by: khmerxkid781

i just hope that vista will be out by then plus the dx 10 video cards. I am also going to get a sata HD. Mabey if i could make about 20 dollars a month (what im doing right now) by treasure trooper. i could purchase a sata HD or mabey a video card

Posted by: goranpaa

Then get a SATA II drive. Seagate have a nice 160gig SATA II (SATA 3.0) I think it's about 82 bucks if I remember correctly?

Posted by: khmerxkid781

I was also wondering about the HD video cards. Would it only work on specific moniters??

Posted by: goranpaa

From what I understand, they are compatible with all monitors.

Posted by: oderus1671

one thing to note when building a new rig from the ground up...
assemble all of your parts "out of the box" first, on a non-conductive material like cardboard. I built 2 rigs using the same model case and both of them had grounding issues, really hard to troubleshoot when all your stuff is stuffed into the box! Sometimes a motherboard will ground out in certain cases, especially if you use the brass mounting studs. Trust me, it can save you a lot of headaches and lost time RMAing a motherboard! Hope that helps!

Posted by: khmerxkid781

how about a plastic covered table. Would it cause static? Or i could rip apart a card board box. Which would work

Posted by: goranpaa

The best way, is to use an antistatic wrist band with a grounding cord. And put the stuff on cardboard as Oderus says. Plastic stuff is always risky, when it comes to static electrisity.

Posted by: goranpaa

Also, you should have the mobo on someting fairly soft ( cardboard on top of a piece of sprogue rubber for ex) when you fit the heatsink. As this often requires some force.

Epox, is smart enough to provide a cardboard template with their mobos, that is good to use for getting the mobo stand off pegs correctly placed in the case. This means you use that one instead of the mobo to get them right. This is very important. As one peg too many or in the wrong place can shorten the mobo.

Posted by: khmerxkid781

how will i know how many pegs for the MB?? and where to put them. Wil there be a installation guide for the pegs?

Posted by: goranpaa

No, If you look inside the case. There are lots of screwholes for the pegs.
This is just because so you will be able to fit any mobo model and size into a case. But as said. If you look inside the Epox mobo box there is a template, where the peg holes is marked. (holes) So you just place the template inside the case. Aligning the template. Then you just have to use a thin marker pen, putting it thru the templates peg holes and rub off some ink on the edge of the cases peg screwholes. Remove the template. And voila! you can see exactly where the pegs should go.

So Epox at least, saves you the job to sketch out a template on paper.

One thing, that will make your "peg job" even easier. Is to mark out on the template, on wich side the USB ports etc is located. This way, you just align the "connectors" on the template to the "Connector grill" on the back of the case.

Then you are really sure to get the pegs right.

Posted by: goranpaa

But have in mind, that it is always easier to mount the CPU and heatsink/fan, before you mount the mobo into the case. Just watch out for any mobo screwholes that may be obstructed by the heatsink.

If that's the case? Then you will have to put the mobo into the case first. And that makes the heatsink mounting a bit more nervous, as the mobo will just rest on the pegs.

And dont tighten the mobo screws hard. That may bend the mobo slightly, resulting in problems.

And whatever you do. DONT forget to connect the cpu fan!!! If you forget it. The cpu will be toast in a matter of seconds.

Posted by: khmerxkid781

My worst nightmare would be the board not working when i install it......

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, that's a horror. Just not only, that you have do dismount everything. But also all the trouble shooting, before you are certain it is the mobo that IS the problem. YAY!

Posted by: goranpaa

But another thing I like about Epox mobos is the LED trouble shooting display. When a hardware problem appears. You just look at that display. And it will give you an error code. Then you just look it up in the mobo manual. Very handy!

Posted by: khmerxkid781

last but not least is the case.

I'm still looking for a well suited case with good air flow around 50 bucks.

Posted by: goranpaa

Well, for 50 bucks, there is'nt too much options.

But maybe.....?

Do you plan on connecting the video card to a HD TV? If so, you might want to look through newegg some more to find the specific type of output you need to match the input on the TV. Super video to super video, VGA to VGA, et cetera. There's a mixed opinion about connecting to HD TV from a computer. Some people say it may cause problems with burn in, others say it depends on the TV you use. If you aren't talking about a TV/monitor, but just "standard" monitors, then any card with VGA out will work. There are also many cards out there with super video, VGA and DVI all on one card.

Posted by: khmerxkid781

i have a question about the EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra. I was reading it and it says there is no onboard video. Will that mean I will have to purchase a video card???

Posted by: goranpaa

Not many PCI E mobos have onboard graphics. The onboard grapics is just crap, at least for gaming anyway. And you said, that you where going to get a videocard for christmas. So I belived you where waiting to get the card and build the PC then.

Posted by: khmerxkid781

I guess that i could wait till the dx 10 cards come out and then start building. Which is a good idea for me to save me money on a second video card, if i plan to build now.

Posted by: goranpaa

yepp!

Posted by: goranpaa

It seems that both Nvidia and ATI is not going to release the direct X 10 cards, until Windows Vista is out.

Posted by: pdnielsen

You'll probably want to buy the power supply separately from the casing anyway. Buying a case with the power supply included hasn't worked too well for me because out of my builds, only the one that came with it was faulty. I think it fried the CPU on my first attempt to build. You might as well put off buying the power supply until later too on the chance that it happens to be defective. (Borrowing a good voltage meter is a good precaution if you decide not to.)

If you're interested in an acrylic case or one with a side window it might be worth taking a look at www.xpcgear.com They're also a good source for thumbscrews, wire ties and other builder supplies. I just wouldn't trust them for power supplies though.

You might want to consider putting the money aside somewhere you won't be tempted to spend it and waiting until December to make a build. I know it sounds like a long time from now, but since you are planning on getting a video card then it might be best. Between now and then the companies that make mobos mioht come out with new features or lower prices might appear on Newegg. And the online sources of CPUs also have a very short time that you can send them back - usually 7 days. I suggest doing lots of research and saving the web pages either under favorites or to disc.
