INternet Explorer stopped working

Hello,
Yesterday Internet Explorer 6 on my PC stopped loading websites.
The browser starts OK, but when I enter a web address in the address bar or choose a favourite site from the list, nothing happens. No spinning hour glass, no message in the status bar. Nothing.
I just upgraded to the new IE7 beta, but I'm having the same problem.
I've tried restarting. No difference.
Tried altering the security settings in IE. No difference.
Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I need to access some sites that are IE only.
I'm running Windows XP (SP2) and Keiro Personal Firewall (doesn't kick in with any warnings when using IE).
Any advice would be appreciated.

I know i have said this before so if i did just disregard.Go to add/remove programs and see if "google toolbar" has been installed,if it has remove it,according to microsoft this is the leading cause of IE to stop working.

The only thing I can think of is to see if a repair install of Windows fixes it.

Iv'e reinstalled Google Toolbar, but IE still isn't working.
Is there any other possible solution, short of re-installing Windows?

Get Mozilla Firefox instead. Much better than the pretty crappy IE. And you can transfer your settings to Firefox. It is as easy to use as IE also.

The repair install will not cause you to loose any data, but it should fix Internet Explorer. Although FireFox is much safer than IE, I still recomend you fix it as you need it for Windows Update to run, and some web sites will not work with FireFox.

NO,take it out completly(google tool bar).Microsoft says it does strange things to IE. After you take "google tool bar"out reboot from cold start.

And, ironically, the help utilities in IE7 don't work either. Boy Microsoft sure know how to make a great product!
Goranpaa (and the rest who will inevitably tell me to switch),
Firefox is my primary browser. I only use IE for sites that Firefox and its IE Tab extension can't/won't load.
Vtac1,
I meant to write I uninstalled Google Toolbar. I've checked the registry and all the Toolbar entries are gone, and I've manually deleted all the leftover files from from the uninstall.
Matt,
Guess I'll have to dig out my XP CD.

Try some spyware scans, with ad-aware, spy bot s&d and hijackthis. With the first two remove anything that it finds then after that is done, run hijackthis, and post the log for it here. All of thes eprograms can be found via google.

I deleted that last post because I wanted to include stuff from it here.
Highjackthis
I've scanned the system using Adaware, Spybot S&D and TweakNow Registry Cleaner. According to all three, my system is clean.
I also ran kazaabegone and cwshredder.exe.
As DemonBob suggested, I've run HijackThis. The log is attached to this link as a TXT file.
I also downloaded and ran StartupList v2. The results from that scan are attached as well.
Any clues what I should delete?
Anything that's marked Symantec or Norton can go - I uninstalled Norton Security about a year ago.
sfx.exe
I've run the Windows XP File Checker (sfc.exe), and it's restored some system files. Hasn't helped with IE7. Although my machine does seem to be slightly quicker now.
Windows Update
I can't connect to Windows Update through XP's Help and Support system. "Connecting..." appears in the H&S window, but nothing connects. Similiar to my IE7 trouble.
Windows Genuine Advantage
Thinking about it, my problem with IE started after I installed Windows Genuine Advantage. Could this be causing the problems? I have a legitimate, OEM copy of Windows XP. If it is, can WGA be removed?
Thank you for all the help so far.

Not long after installing IE7, my hard drive died.
Made uninstalling IE7 a moot point.

The problems with IE may have been a sign that the hard drive was dying. sometimes dying drives start randomly dropping parts of apps or even the registry and they just appear to be problems with just a particular program. I had an 8 gig drive about a year ago that kept crashing the system because it couldn't hold onto the registry for more than a day or two. I took the hint when it would fail drive tests (in Win 98 then), have them automatically repaired and then fail again on a second run of those same tests and then be automatically repaired again (ad nauseum)

u could try uninstallin internet explorer slef, and then reinstalling it..

You can't really "uninstall" internet explorer. If firefox works, just get the IE tabs extension for it so you can display internet explorer pages like windows update in it.
