CD and DVD drives "missing"??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm hoping that somebody can help me with this situation. A few days ago both the CD and DVD drives went "missing" from my Dell 2400. I don't know if it matters or not but I happen to have had a CD in at the time looking at some photos when everything just "stopped". Neither the CD or DVD drives will work and they are no longer listed in My Computer, Windows Explorer, or the Device Manager. When I reboot I get a message that says "secondary drive 0 not found" and "secondary drive 1 not found"

Has anybody ever had this to happen before and how can I "fix" it?

I would appreciate any help that could be provided.

Thank you

k..

seems like it might be power / data cable.

make sure the power cable is inserted properly, maby try a different power cable.
also make sure your data cable is in properly.

even if the drive self is buggered, it should still pick it up. (unless the cables are in, but it's not getting power.)

lastly, you could check your bios and make sure that the ide channel is set to auto detect.

Also run a registry repair / cleaner software. I have seen some "lost" drives", come back after runnig a reg cleaner.

Is the CD you mentioned one that you put photos on yourself? If so, you might want to make sure you include the disc in a virus scan.

It could be a driver problem and the drives do not have drivers (it does seem unlikley that both optical drives would have a hardware problem at the same time), but it could be that the problem is a hardware issue. I would check to make sure the cables (both power and interface) are firmly connected, and if they look that way then unplug them and re-plu them in. I have seen cables that were not detected, but unpluging and repluging them in fixed it. By the way, what is the interface of the drives?

check to see if they are visible in the bios. that will tell you if you have a hardware or software issue.
