Can't burn with my DVD-RW

It's a Sony DVD+-RW DW-D56A. It won't read the a DVD but will read CD's and burn CD's no probs. I used to be able to burn DVD's all the time but one day it stopped.
A mate told me that the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers are set wrong and to change it. He says the:
Primary IDE Channel: should be set to Transfer Mode: "DMA if available" and Current Tranfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 2.
Secondary IDE Channel: should be set to Transfer Mode: "DMA if available" and Current Tranfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5.
Now the secondary IDE Channel is right but the Primary is wrong. How do I change it. I can't from the device manager. Any other way???

Sometimes the DMA settings cannot be changed in the operating system, but can be changed in BIOS, and then only with particular versions of BIOS. I found that out when I tried to activate the DMA mode on my Lite-On drive from within Windows. Try going through all the settings in your BIOS to see if you can change them there. You might also try going to install the drivers for the drive again. Some driver setups automatically put the correct settings in place. Go to the Sony website and download updates to them if you need to.
Otherwise, try giving people more information on what motherboard you have, model of computer you have if its a premade et cetera. I see you're a new member of this forum and one of the first things people need to help you is more information about what system you're trying to fix.
