Missing Icons

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

All of a sudden the icons on my desktop are gone for: My Computer, IE, Adobe and My Documents. Within My Computer the icon is missing for: Nero Scout and the DVD Drive. They just disappered the other day. I hadn't restarted the laptop until this morning thinking the'd reappear when I did this but they haven't. I can still click on them and enter them but the icon itself is gone. All them icons are now the white page with a dog ear in the upper right corner and a window box in the centre. The one used when an unrecognised file is on your desktop!

Any help much appreciated!

Run a Full virus scan from this link http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Right click on the desktop and select refresh. If that doesn't help, do a repair install.

How do you do a repair install??

Posted by: matt.modica

Reboot and isert the XP disk as if you were going to do a full format/reinstall, but instead of selecting reinstall, select repair install. You won't loose any data.

Note: If you put in the XP disk but Windows still loads normally, you will have to change the boot order in the BIOS. The way to do this will vary depending on what BIOS you have, but its typically done by pressing F2 at the POST (power on self test, the screen that shows the logo of you computer manufacturer/BIOS) screen, and looking around for boot order and making the computer boot from the CD/DVD drive before the hard disk.

you can also try this :

go to display properties, desktop, customize desktop. in the sections where u specify
the icons, try clicking 'use default', and c what it does.

also c if you have tweakui running. should find it in the control panel.
there is a lot of icon changing options there.
