Need help regarding sound!!!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I asked this question around 2-3 months ago but still have the same problem. I thought I might ask again in case I might have better luck this time.
For some reason, I can't hear any sound coming from flash players/videos. Everything else works fine like Windows Media Player, Stram Videos etc. But no sound from flash.
I have the latest Flash Player, I have tried reinstalling both Macromedia Flash AND the Flash Player. I tried using Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. I searched on the net for help but came out empty handed. I also asked friends but still nothing. I have checked the sound devices and everything, but I never mess around with the computer's settings so I don't think that is the problem.
I thought maybe some Flash files are damaged bu corrupted bu considering I tried reinstalling them, still nothing. My Norton Antivirus didn't detect any viruses. I also tried updating my windows and any of my players like Divx and stuff. Still nothing!!!
I have gone to Newgrounds many times to see flash videos and such and has always been able to hear sound before...until now =(
I really need help with this since I want to be an animator and will soon be learning how to use Macromedia Flash in university. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you could, list down possible things to do. This is driving me insane!!!
Thanks very much in advance.

Two words above were very important: "Norton Antivirus." I think that may be part of the problem. You are using the worst anti-virus on the market according to some people. Try downloading AVG Free from Griosoft. www.free.grisoft.com or Avast! www.avast.com and running them. You also have not mentioned any type of firewall, in which case if you don't have one try GhostWall. http://www.ghostsecurity.com/index.php?page=ghostwall
If the antivirus software doesn't find anything, try doing a repair install of your OS.
As a matter of fact you've given very little information to help those who want to help you. What sound card are you using, on what mobo if it's integrated and what operating system are you using? I had to base all my suggestions on the assumption that you are using Windows on a system that doesn't have a firewall, but has an integrated sound card. I'm not critizing you, it's just an elementary mistake that most people make when posting a question.

Oh sorry. Umm...first of all, I had Norton Antivirus since last year, and this problem happened 2-3 months ago.
I am not good with computers, so not sure I can answer all your questions. I do have a Firewall. In the "Security Options" in "Control Panel" it says: "Windows Firewall", that's it.
For Sound card....well under "Sound, video and game controllers" in "Device Manager" it lists these:
- Audio Codecs
- Legacy Audio Drivers
- Legacy Video Capture Devices
- Media Control Devices
- Realtek High Definition Audio
- Video Codecs
(Before them has the little "speakers" symbol.
I don't know what "mobo" is and what do you mean by "what operating system am I using?" Also what is an "OS"?
Sorry for being naive, but as I said, I am not good with computers.

The operating system is the software that your computer runs on - Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Linux, Mac OS are all operating systems. "OS" is short for operating system and mobo is short for MOtherBOard. Any question marks or exclamation points surrounded by yellow blobs in device manager for that stuff you listed? It looks like you have some kind of integrated RealTek card on your mobo. Any yellow blobs would indicate that there is a problem with your sound driver or that it may be out of date.
Also, Windows Firewall is a misnomer. It really isn't much of a firewall. Microsoft itself recommends getting additional firewall protection even though they don't make any specific recommendation. I was just thinking that there is the possibility that your system has been hacked or attacked by one of the many viruses that Norton says aren't there. My parents had Norton on their Pentium S ("one") for 6 years and when I finally got around to putting McAfee on it (after Norton failed to find anything) it found a squashed 14 viruses that Norton failed even to find! You might want to check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to see if they have McAfee available for free. Many do, but aren't doing a very thorough job of letting people know that. Verizon is one, AOL is another.

There is nothing next to the listed items, no exclamations, no yellow blobs nothing.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition I believe. That or Professional.
McAfee eh? How do I check my ISP if they have it for free? Do I call them? Can't I just download McAfee from a site or something? Or is it not one of those things you can just find and install?
As for the firewall, should I just leave it?
BTW< you said that it may be because I have been attacked by a virus or something...but ever since that day, I don't think I have visited any unfamiliar sites except for some sites I visited for university research. But I will try getting this "McAfee" thing though.
If it doesn't work, would you mind if I send you a private message? In case it takes me a while.

Try giving your service provider a call and asking if they have antivirus and firewall software available. In the meanwhile, be patient about finding suggestions on here from other people about what it might be. Many people don't type answers until the evening.

You could also try an online scan to make sure you have the latest signatures by going to to: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ or http://www.bitdefender.com/ and following the instructions there.

Thanks for the help so far guys, really appreciate it =)
I'm gonna try downloading McAfee as my mum's office uses that programme and says that she got it from the net *shrugs*.
Do you guys think that viruses can affect flash players and disabling their sound?
If a virus is near the top of the list than I will look around for scanners and stuff. I'm gonna try the two links matt.modica gave me. Thanks again, if you guys find out more or have more suggestions please put them down =)

Hi again. I am trying to use that housecall one but everytime I press the start button (the last page after clicking start and agreeing to terms and conditions), it goes to a screen and does nothing. The only thing moving is this red bar on the left side that goes left and right and left and right over and over.
Is this right? It says I needed to install some softwares but I can't find them =S

I just scanned my computer using that Bitdefender but my flash sound still isn't working. I also scanned it with Sting McAfee and still doesn't work. *sigh*... I fear my flash player or its corrupted files are forever corrupted/gone/destroyed.
But I will still search for more solutions! Also... I heard from Bitdefender a virus software called Malware... what is that?
And could my problem be associated with spyware?
Anymore type of scanners I should try?
Posted by: matt.modica
Malware is just a genral term for spyware/adware/dialers/keyloggers/trojans and other malicious programs that are not considdered viruses because they do not replicate.
Malicious + Software = Malware

What happened right around the time when this started. If we something happened, then we might be able to figgure out a solution.

The time my flash sounds didn't work was near the time I installed Adobe Illustrator which was around late February and early March. But mind you... Illustrator wasn't the culprit as I thought before since my brother did the same and his flash sounds still working.
He said that it could be my "crap" laptop. *shrugs*. Don't believe that though since I think VAIO laptops are awesome! (Because this laptop is the same one that my Dad's friend's boss is using and he is the boss for a computer company of some sort.
EDIT: Other than that nothing... I still visited the same sites. The only thing that changed in my comp was the Adobe Illustrator. Because by the time I started doing new things like installing new games or visiting new sites, it was "After" my flas sounds didn't work. Right now, I am trying to clean my computer in case it does any help.
I thought it was the flash site I was visiting but I have visited 3 flash sites that used to work but now doesn't.

It could be a problem with windows. To rule that out, do a repair install by hen putting the Windows XP disk in and rebooting. Instead of loading Windows, it should ask wheather you want to do a reformat/reinstall or a repair install, so select repair install. You won't loose any data. If that doesn't fix it, then it would logicly be a hardware problem, but that seems unlikley.

Umm... my Laptop VAIO never came with a disk =(
I tried system restore but it never let me for some reason =S
That is a good idea though, I'm gonna ask my comp friend to see if he can help me with that idea. Thanks.
If you have anymore don't hesitate to post =) You guys been very helpful =)

Well.. could be barking up the wrong tree here.. one thing that happens, that some people don't look at is that something else (a process) is actually using up the Audio resource and Flash can't grab it back to use it.
Windows Media Player sometimes has privledged access to resources to the Codec driver - so it may work whereas other media players may not.
One thing i would look at doing is: actually stopping some processes that maybe interfering with Flash's ability to use the audio card... Sounds odd - but i've seen it happen.
Click on CTRL + SHIFT + ESC - click on the processes tab...
End winamp processes if you have any.
End Run32dll processes (this wont hurt anything - if something legit is using it - it'll relaunch it automatically)
End any other Media Player process.
End any CD burning processes (assuming yer not burning anything at the time)
Close down any internet browser (IExplorer, Firefox, Avant Browser, etc)
Once done: End any iexplorer processes - or processes that seem to hang around (if any)
Alot of the time - after you've closed your browser - the process hangs on close - and may hang the Flash audio module .. not releasing the resource new instance require to use the audio drivers...
Like i said - it's a long shot - but I've seen wierder things happen in my 11 years as a System Admin.
Good Luck..

also.. one more thing.
in Internet Explorer for instance... if you click on Tools | Internet Options -- hit the Advanced tab..
There's a Multimedia section... in this section - you can actualy disable sound when viewed in a browser... Ensure that Sound is enabled. Easiest thing to do there - is to click on the Restore Defaults button..

Hey alro, thanks for the suggestions. I checked the process tab and there was no run32.dll or any other sound related processes that was on. The only thing I recognise was iexplorer, which is the page when I was reading your message.
I did once checked the multimedia thing on the internet options>tools etc. I once tried enabling everything and it didn't work. And I'm sure I restored default before and it still didn't work.
Usually, the only thing running on is MSN Messenger, but that has never interferred in anyway.
But your explanation about flash not being able to grab the sound card due to other devices kinda makes sense and I'll try again to see if I missed anything.
Thanks again alro. If you have any other ideas, even the crazy ones, please don't hesitate to post since I need all the help I can get.
