NO WINDOWS I DOUBLE CLICKED IT BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO OPEN IT

how do I turn this shit off

I believe if you goto internet options, advanced tab, Uncheck "Check for signatures on downloaded programs"

Posted by: AltronHGX

that's not it

It should be the suggestion above and uncheck the below item:
"Check for Publisher's Certificate Revocation"

Posted by: AltronHGX

Tried that too- that's not it, either

Simple yet complicated: back up your data files to discs, reformat the drive, install Windows XP, and then DON'T INSTALL SP2!

Or just forget the whole thing and click "run" when the stupid thing appears. I have NO software that Microsoft lists a known publisher for. This includes software BY Microsoft! I get the same security warning when trying to install Office 2003 or the software that came with my Microsoft Wireless Keyboard & Mouse. And if you try to install anything using Vista Beta 2 build 5342 it gets even worse - try 3 different "buttons" you have to click to even start a setup program!

Your suggestion is terrible. "Simple" is not wiping my entire system to remove a dialogue box.

Did you stop to think that maybe my XP install disc is a Service Pack 2 disk?

Thanks for the help, pdnielsen!

You were a later adopter of your OS then. Most people who have XP bought it pre-SP2. And I didn't say it was just simple to wipe the system. I said it was "simple yet complicated" - meaning easy to do but extremely time consuming. But as I also pointed out, I do not have ANY software that Microsoft recognizes the publisher of - even when it IS the publisher. That dialog box comes up whenever SP2 doesn't recognize the publisher and is meant to protect you from installing software that might damage your system. I never said it actually worked at it, just that it's what it's supposedly designed for. You can also try un-selecting the "always ask" box and see what happens.

I got a disc several years ago When XP came out but gave it away to a relative who lives halfway across the country when I obtained a shiny new SP2 disk--which I haven't needed to use until recently when I reinstalled my OS.

Wow I never thought of that!!!!

The "Always ask" check applies to that partcular file, not every .exe file I will ever open on my system.

Yeah, but we're dealing with software from Microcrud, remember?

And your sarcasm suggests that you don't appreciate the fact that at least people are trying to help you, so get a @#$% life, dude!
