Blue screen of death on startup

Ok, my mom in an idiot and was trying to get into outlook. Because she's impatient she clicked the icon probably 20 times, and then the blue screen of death came up (they're computer is a piece of crap.) I figured, ok no big woop I will just restart and everything will be fine. Wrong. Everytime the computer is restarted, the blue screen of death comes up. I think my mom corrupted windows. I copied the error line down, and it goes like this:

*** STOP: 0x0000006F (0xc000003A, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Does anyone know what I can do? Repair install of windows perhaps? I don't really know how to do a repair install... Everytime I try, I end up installing windows ontop instead. Help!

Ok this is really bad. I made him reformat and install a fresh copy of xp and the memory error came up while xp was installing. I have no idea what to do. I think the computer is FUBAR. Reformating has always been my final solution, but now that it failed I don't know what else to do.

I see you have two hard drives. I know it might be a long shot, but try taking out the memory for a few minutes and placing it back in. Then do an install to just one of the hard drives while the other is disconnected. Even though it reads as a memory error, you've got to remember that Windows is a Microsoft product and sometimes reads errors that aren't even there (as in with beta editions) or as memory errors when something else is the problem. Taking the memory out for a few minutes will make absolutely certain that no electricity reaches it and therefore it is "empty." If it fails to install completely to one hard drive, try installing to the other. Trial and error is sometimes the best way to find out what, if anything, has died in your PC.

As for repair install of Windows, when you do an install over a Windows installation that is already there it will ask if you want to do a repair to it (after you select the same partition) or if you want to delete it and do a new install. It says to hit "R" to select repair. It starts up and appears to be a new install from there unless it encounters any software by publishers Windows doesn't recognize. Then it will ask for confirmation of the 25 character code as usual after a while and continue as a normal first time setup would.

Almost forgot to mention...just make sure that the BIOS reads the SATA drive(s) "as IDE" before you try to set up, or the install will say there aren't any drives. People are always forgetting that.

If the repair install doesn't work I'd say the HD has kicked the bucket, it could be the memory (or another random component) but this seems less likely as most of the other possibilities have no moving parts to fail. Did you make Windows run the full disk check before trying to repair because if you didn't this would be the first thing I'd try as it will confirm whether there are any errors on the HD. You could also switch SMART on in the BIOS as this will often tell you if the disk is on the way out. Yes I do realise this is not the machine you have in your sig as it's unlikey you would describe this as "piece of crap"!

Well first off, don't be looking at my specs, it's my family's computer downstairs. It's a p4 1.7 ghz with 256mbs of ram. It has an 80 gig IDE harddrive.

The first thing I did when it kept coming up after restarting was taking out the ram. I pulled it out and left it like that for about 10 minutes. I plugged it back in, and still the message came up. I formated the drive and tried to reinstall windows, and the error came up while installing. I think it may be the harddrive. When the blue screen of death came up while I was installing windows it says something about a driver not being able to be tranfered over... I don't know...

Its probably a hardware problem, most likley with the hard disk. Try getting a new one, as it sounds like it kicked the bucket.

Do you have a tools disc that came with the hard drive or is the computer a pre-built with the original hard drive? If you have a tools disc for it, try resetting up the drive. Sometimes Windows install fails to re-format the drive completely, and this causes errors too. That said though, sometimes the hard drive tools will appear to setup even a defective disc! Any clicking noises from it, loud hums, or large amounts of heat call also be taken as a sign that the drive is gone to "the great builder in the sky!"

The drive definatly kicked the bucket. My dad bought a new maxtor 200 gig harddrive, I installed it last night, reformated it and installed windows fine. Oh man, thought I had myself in a pickle there. Anyways thanks for your help guys.
