connect to LAN but not to internet

hey everyone, im a semi-n00b, so bear with me.

i am able to connect to my LAN through my router, but not to the internet.
but another machine on my network connects to both just fine.

also, through the USB cord on my modem, i am able to connect with the bad machine.

but i am not able to connect individually to the internet through the LAN port...

this is really weird to me.
if i can connect to the LAN, my LAN hardware should all be working,
and if i can connect through the USB port, my network options should be ok(?)
and if the other computer can connect to the internet with or without the router, then the internet, modem and router should be working....

i tried updating the ethernet driver already....

also with my last ISP i was able to connect just fine through the LAN port and the router...

im almost positive that this is a software issue...

please help!

(btw i have to use DHCP)

Try going into Internet Properties. Select LAN settings, click the box that says, Aotomaticly detect LAN settings and click OK. try that. If not you will have to run the connection wizard again to setup the connection using the always available option.

Ah this is a nightmare problem, i've had this happen before.

Are you using wireless at all?

Once when my PC did this I couldn't connect to the internet at all, or LAN, wireless or not. That was an XP error and a fresh installation fixed that.

Although your's doesn't seem to be the same as that, recently I have been unable to connect the internet, but been able to connect to LAN and another PC on the network has been able to connect to the internet.

Not really sure why though, but anyway I had updated my router a while before, so I reverted back to my backup config and reset factory settings. I also did a system restore so an earlier point.
They might not seem like causes but I was at a loss.

It now all works fine.
