Removable disk (USB) does not show up

I recently reinstalled WinXP Pro SP2 (with all updates to date) and whenever I connect a USB disk or digital camera, it does not show up in My Computer?!?!?!?!
The only way I can access it is under disk management, but this is time consuming.
Is there a registry key that needs to be edited?
Help!?!?!?!!?

Make sure that you have updated your USB port drivers. THis may not be the problem, but it could be.

did you remember to update your board drivers after reinstall?

Some mobos require that you go to the device manager and uninstall the USB Composite Device and then reboot in order for the drivers for USB 1 to be updated to USB 2 properly. If the USB connector is still set for USB 1 it won't work at all and won't find the devices. I know this because it happens that my USB Hi-Fi Link drops out all the time. You wouldn't happen to be using a Giga-Byte mobo, would you?

Thanks for the ideas with the USB drivers, but I tried that and it does not help.
Clearly the USB device is working fine, I think it is a problem with Windows registry, could be a bug in the registry, I just have no idea what key to look for. Any ideas?

Does it show up in the device manager? Try running sfc /scannow. If that doesn't work, try a repair install.
