Well I recently downloaded some updates and now when I turn on my computer some messages come up about not having a genuine copy of Windows xp and software counterfeiting and what not. Apparently my cousin installed his copy of windows with a false product key onto my computer. My xp has been working fine and i really dont care about the product being genuine. Im not about to go out and buy a copy of windows. Will not having genuine software have any serious affect on my pc?

many of the updates will no longer install/download.

the microsoft police will be arriving at your door shortly.
why wont you buy a legit copy?

I just don't think that not being able to download updates anymore is reason enough to buy another copy. Furthermore, I'm poor.

And another thing, is there any way to stop these annoying notifications?

Turn on the automatic updates. I suggest using the "download updates and let me choose when to install them" option because that way you don't have to be online at the same time every day. I also found out that getting a genuine copy of Windows XP Pro is getting less and less expensive. If you're willing to shell out $90 for it you can find some places that sell it that cheap by Googling around.
I know about this because my copy of Windows isn't "genuine" either and had I known before I paid for it I wouldn't have gotten mine either. I would have made do with Windows 96se for another month and shelled out an extra $40 for a genuine one after my next disability check arrived - so I know what it is to be poor. I don't have cancer anymore, but my credit rating sure does!

Also, run a virus/malware scan to make sure this isn't some malware. and run the microsoft genuine advantage tool just to make sure. Where did you get your copy of XP?

Idk, my cousin configured my computer.

just keep in mind that if you cant install updates, you are vulnerable to internet hackers who exploit these holes that the updates "fix".
By the way...
see that vehicle parked across the street from your house? They are coming... RUN RUN RUN!!!

Turning on the automtic updates will make it so the Windows updates download automatically and fill in said "holes." That's what the word "automatic" means.

That black van has been parked outside for a pretty long time....

Don't worry though. It has an awful lot of parking tickets on the windshield for being parked next to a fire hydrant and will be towed away very soon.

what a relief

Use System Restore to restore to a point before the update. Then just don't get the WGA update. Once you have the money purchase a legit copy, in the meantime, chew yer cousin out for installing an illegal version on your computer.
