Ghosting hdd's

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: WOCSS

I am trying to Ghost a SATA 250gb WD hdd with about 30gb of used space to a 40gb ATA backup drive i have. My question is can you Ghost from a SATA TO A ATA DRIVE. I was told no... and i haven't found a program that will work... I have tryed norton ghost, and the WD diag cd and they do not work right... the WD version isn't picking up the ATA drive when the SATA is pluged in (It finds it fine when it is a stand alone device)... IF someone has done this please tell me what program they used and how they did it...

...Thank you...

Try the Acronis True image trial. I have cloned a setup from my Raptor Sata to the Western Digital ATA I have. No problems. Just follow the instructions in Acronis T.i. It's a breeze. Norton Ghost, did'nt work for me either.

Note: Norton Ghost is from Symantec. Need I say more? A version of it was supplied with my last 3 mobos that were all listed as "designed for Windows XP" and guess what? The version of Ghost was only good up to Windows 98se.

Yepp. Stupid Symantec, is trying to use DOS in Windows XP. Wich is nearly non existent.
But they claim, even in their 2003 version that it's compatible with XP.

Acronis, True Image is working very well. Just like their other stuff.

The only software, that Symantec have come up with that is good, is Partition Magic.

I agree with you Goranpaa, but don't forget Partition Magic wasn't originally Symantec's. They only acquired it after buying out Powerquest. That would explain why it is better than anything that Symantec have ever created. Powerquest's Drive image used to be good for creating HD images, but the last version didn't work too good with XP. True Image is the best bet now.

Lol. Why am I not really surprised that Partiton Magic whas'nt Symatec's from the start.
It whas too good to be true, that Symantec by themself should come up with a software like that.

Just pity, they also took over Sygate. Good firewall, especially the free one. But dont belive it whas free after the takeover. oh no! So now we see greedy Symatec, destroying Sygates good stuff.

If you want a good firewall I use Kerio personal firewall. When you first install you get the full prog, but after the trial period it just reverts to a standard firewall. Still works OK, but withouth the bells & whistles. There is always Zonealarm, that I also use, not on the same system obviously. Sygate was very good, I think Symantec are getting like Microsoft. They want to take over the world. Total control freaks.

Posted by: pdnielsen

Except for Symantec is even worse - except for the taking over the world part because too many other people thought of their ideas and got them to market before or at the same time.

Posted by: kestrel1

I wonder if Symantec are actually in competition with MS. MS try to make an OS faster, Symantec try to slow it down. Mind you they both leave bugs in their software, for us poor sods to find for them. Then they take an age to fix the problem if at all, probably because they don't know what the hell they are doing.
This thread has rather got off of the original ghost problem & turned into a slagging off of Symantec & MS. Sorry about that, guy's & gal's.

Let's form a Symantec haters club! lol.

Posted by: kestrel1

Not a bad idea! or are we just loosing the plot?
ooops, I lost the plot a long time ago. lol

Well we could take a number from the these guys. Speaking of which i got about 50 cd's to send them. http://nomoreaolcds.com/

Posted by: pdnielsen

I'm gluing together the stack of CDs I get from all the dial up service providers plus any other coasters I've made myself. It will eventually be tall enough to run an electric cord through and to attach a light socket at one end, a plug at the other and "voila!" a lamp!!! It's not my idea of course. I read it in a newspaper article about a year ago. Some people also string the cds together side by side and then cover them with polyethylene and make a decorative wall or hanging.

LOL I get an AOL CD every month in Game Informer plus random ones ocasionally. We should ask AOL to send us CD-RWs so we can actually use them...

I do my part, whenever I see a computer with Norton I tell them to get another AV like TrendMicro...

boycottsymantec.com is not an actuall site, mabye we could set up one and have people who do not like symantec sign a guestbook.

If this was done, I suspect that the guest book would fill up in no time. I wouldn't say that Symantec are a bad company, it's just the software that they write is crap & slows PC's down to a crawl. I am sure if they could resolve these issues, we would all like it a bit better. OK, maybe not. I always prefer the free options anyway. AVG free, ClamAV, Zonealarm & anything else that is free. Not all is of it is good, but what the hell, it's worth a try if it don't cost anything.

I tried to use acronis workstation to clone my maxtor 250G drive to a WD 200G and when I went to boot it I received an error message:"DID NOT PROPERLY GENERATE ARC NAME FOR HAL AND SYSTEM PATHS" It was my first time using the program, everything seemed to go flawlessly until I tried to boot the new drive. I have since aquired a copy of the ACRONIS HOME version, not sure if that will make a difference or not. The reviews I have read have all been very positive, no issues just as goranpaa posted. The destination drive was set to master, I just disconnected one of my DVD drives. The entire transfer took about 15 minutes, it seemed a lot faster than I was expecting, too good to be true(image) sorry about the pun....

I would for sure write in that guestbook!!!

But look at his lol.

Lets face it can Norton protect anyone?

Posted by: goranpaa

Probably not. But it gives you a lot of interesting trouble shooting to do now and then. When it is'nt occupied with slowing down your pc or lappy that is.

Posted by: Zow

So...any chance one of you can tell me what that error message means? Do you think I should just try to clone my drive again? Any help would be appreciated.
Error message:"DID NOT PROPERLY GENERATE ARC NAME FOR HAL AND SYSTEM PATHS"

Posted by: goranpaa

Yeah, give it a new try. It seems like something went wrong during the cloning process.

Posted by: Zow

Does it matter where I attach the hard drive I am cloning to? I was told by a buddy to disconnect a DVD drive and just use that IDE cable and set the destination drive to master. I was wondering if it had to be on my hard drive IDE cable and set to slave?

Posted by: goranpaa

No, I have cloned from a SATA drive to a ATA drive. And those 2 drives have completly different cables / controllers on the mobo.

Posted by: kestrel1

As long as the drives are using on-board controllers (SATA, IDE, USB) you should be able to clone the drives. Make sure that all drive jumpers are set correctly (Master, slave, Master with slave present)
If using cable select then use 80 wire IDE cables.

Posted by: Zow

I made sure of all jumpers were correct etc, but still continued to get the same error message. I read somewhere that it may be an "overlay" problem? Anyway, ended up copying my critical data to a seperate drive then formatted, reinstalled everything yadda yadda...the 8 hour method. Would have much preferred the Acronis 15-20 minute option, but just not in the cards.
Thanks anyway for the assistance.
