Stunning news if this is true...
Vivendi Universal Games gave a presentation to Wall Street today. Too much to report on everything said, but the big one was:
"All Blizzard franchises will become MMOGs."
All. They claim they have a model now to develop an MMOG in 3 years for $50 million. WoW cost 50 million euros and took 4 1/2 years.
They have bifurcated the MMOG market into two parts: long session games (more than two hours per session) and short session games (less than two hour sessions.) They will also be rolling out a bunch of short session games under the Sierra Online brand. An example is FreeStyle, a pick-up basketball online game scheduled for 2007 release. No details on pricing model for the short session games.

Not really all that stunning. WoW has the most subscriptions of any mmo ever, pulling in almost as much by itself as every other one together. Something like, 40% of the market.
It's a license to print money for them and it makes sense that they'll be doing their other IP's in the same vein, especially when you consider the (nominally small) number of people who would play wow if it were based on the starcraft or diablo (or whatever) universes, regardless of if it were purely a cosmetic change.
And no, I'm not saying what you think I'm saying, so don't even bring it up.

According to some Blizzard reps on the WoW forums, it was a misquote

WoW is gay. I want them to go back to the Warcraft III type game play.

Thankfully, what you want doesn't matter!

You must be a WoW fan then... Personally, I think the warcraft III gameplay was alot better. There's also the aspect of not having to pay a monthly fee for multiplayer..

I've never played wow, and I likely never will.
The idea of subscription based gameplay isn't shocking or alarming to me, one I have the money to waste on it, and two I was doing it almost ten years ago.
And this talk of war3 gameplay has got to stop. It's still warcraft, it's now just switched genres. Nothing is stopping you from playing warcraft 3 as it exists in the rts genre.
You can't really compare the two because, outside of the shared universe they are almost completely and totally different.
