IP address

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

For some odd reason the last 3 digits of my ip address are changing back and fourth. It goes from .100 to .101 constantly... This is extremely annoying especially because I need to change all the forwarded applications in my router config. What going on here?

Posted by: kestrel1

Are you getting your IP address via DHCP? If so, that is the reason.

Uhh, I'm not sure. All I know is my IP just started changing recently. Could me editing the mac filter list have anything to do with this?

I looked under IP config and it just says:

DHCP Enabled: Yes
Auto Config Enabled: Yes
IP Address: ***.***.*.101 <which is constantly changing back and forth to .100

Everything else looks normal. I just need to know whats going on, I can't keep forwarding my ports everytime it changes... Help?

Please help this is ruining everything! Programs aren't working because of router stuff!

Try giving the machine a static IP address. That way it won't use DHCP. It should then stay at the correct setting.

Oh god, this is way out of my league. I don't know how to do that... DAMNIT WHY CAN'T IT JUST STAY THE SAME. Stuipid router.

Its simple.

Go to Start=>Control Panel

In the Control Panel, look for Network Connections

In the Network Connections window, right-click on Local Area Connection (or whichever one pertains to your wired connection) and click Properties.

In the Properties window, look for Internet Protocol TCP/IP and double click it

Change the setting from Obtain an IP Automatically to Use the following.....In put your ip, subnet mask and default gateway (router ip).

Click save and see if you can get online.

Okay thanks. My main problem is with the torrent program Azureus. I have everything forwarded properly, but for some reason I'm still getting a NAT error. The funny thing is I'm able to download stuff still...

Posted by: kestrel1

Do you have NAT enabled on your router?

I'm not sure. The good news is I called my ISP and found out why my IP address keeps changing. Apparently they switch the address every 3-7 days for "security purposes".

Can anyone help me, step by step, set up a static IP so it stays the same?

When ever I go to the Internet Protocol properties, and put in my own ip, dns, and default gateway, I lose internet, and can't access my router config. HELP!

If you want a static IP you will need to speak to your ISP. That way, any traffic that is destined for your IP will be routed to you.

Posted by: gam3r

No, there's a way to set it up in windows...

http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

Just when I do that, I have no connection...

You need to setup a static IP to be in the same range as is being used when you can connect. Use DHCP to get an IP address from your ISP, then go to 'run' & type 'cmd', press enter. once you have the DOS prompt box, type 'ipconfig /all'
This will give you your current IP address on the NIC that you are using. You also want the subnet mask & the IP of the default gateway & the DNS server.
You should then be able to setup a static IP, as you have tried previously. With any luck, this will work.

I have a similar prob at the moment with my router so I will read this thread again and see if I can't figure out the problem by myself, and then maybe, if I can't, I will sent the info re my own circs for some advice. Meanwhile. who picks the avatars/thumbnail pics for each person?.. the very apt pic for gam3r is from the front cover of a mid 60's album by a band called King Crimson. Used to listen to that one a lot way back when..... good memories.. Bill Bruford (still a powerhouse and still in the business) was the drummer.... aahh! Sorry this is not entirely (read "at all" ) relevant.
