*** make sure the notebook has 802.11b/g

Most laptops come with wireless built in these days. If you want to make the desktop wireless you will need to buy a PCI wireless NIC.

Thank you kestrel1 for an intelligent answer,i was talking about my desktop. But it takes all kinds ,even wanabees.

why would you want your desktop to be wireless? keep in mind wireless speeds are fast nowadays, but no where near as fast and stable as wired. go for a wireless router and a lappy with built-in 802.11 b/g. Is your modem a great distance away from the desktop?

No modem will not be far away.As far as why,i was visiting my son ,and he was doing his thing on his desktop, while i was using his laptop for work,With single modem it worked out real well. I have work with computers many years, but have no wireless exp.

you dont need to make the desktop wireless to do that. the only thing that will need to be wireless would be the laptop. the desktop can remain wired, as the router will also have a built in switch with multiple ports.

If you want to improve the range of your wireless network, you could install a wireless card into the desktop & have the router/modem further away. It may not make that much difference, but you may get a better connection speed with your laptop.
I have a wireless network setup at home & I have a wireless card in the desktop. I don't have a wireless router though (can't afford it just yet). My modem is connected to the desktop via USB & I have setup Internet connection sharing. This can be a pain, because the desktop needs to be on for the Internet connection, but it does work rather well. I would prefer a wireless router/modem, so that I can improve the connection speed on the laptop, when I am sat out in the garden. I am sure I will one day.
