Plugging in case to Mobo
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Caution
Ok guys well today i went a bought my self a thermaltake armor jr and this was my first time putting a mobo in a case (i've upgraded parts several times) well no i have these 4 cables comming out of the power switch thing at the front. one says powe sw, reset sw, hdd led, power led. well now i checked my mobo manual to see where to plug them in and it looks like i have plugged them into the rite places but yet my comp still wont turn on. But there was one instance wen the cpu did turn on but my screen said no signal, the power led and cd drive leds were on but the cd drives didnt open. the cpu cooler was running as well so i decided to swap em round and now im just stuck :/ my mobo is the one in my sig ty for ur help guys.
And oh yea I havnt installed the other cables for the top part of the case which ar the usb, firewire, mic, and audio cables. could that be part of the problem?
Posted by: goranpaa
The cables coming from the case, does'nt sometimes match the mobo manual. Did you get any manual for the case?
You may have to puzzle with those cables somewhat.
If the videocard message said "No signal". You will have to reseat the card. Check the extra power connection in the back of the card. Check the monitor connection to the card.

Nope.
The Armor Jr. is a very nice case.

also, check that the motherboard is NOT touching anything other than the motherboard screws that keep it away from the case. Sound to me like a grounding issue. try setting everything up on a nonconductive surface like cardboard, and see if it works. if it works outside the case and not inside it, you got a ground somewhere.
Posted by: Caution
does it matter which way the plugs from the case are into the mobo?

Uh what happens if it was touching the case while it wasnt turned on?
ok now i got the power switch, hdd, and cd drive lites working how ever the cd drives dont want to open and the reset switch doesnt want to work as well althought the LEds come up. and also i can make the comp turn on with the power button but i cant make it turn off with it so i have to use the switch at the back of the psu....
maybe im missng som cables on the cd or HDD drives? on both of my cd/dvd drives ive only got 1 molex and 1 ide cable put onto both. Is there another cable missing maybe? and for my HDD i got a single ide cable and a molex as well.
The GPU also still doesnt wanna work after reseating it
*edit* and oh yea all the fans on my mobo, gpu and psu are running well...
Posted by: goranpaa
Try different pin configurations with the Power sw. Both horizontal and vertical. When you got every thing right. Make a note of how these cables from the case are connected, and keep it for future needs.
Posted by: Caution
nvm guys thank you very much for ur help it turns out it didnt work because i forgot to plug in some 4 plug thing from my psu to my mobo! What a relief
Posted by: Caution
I was just wondering if these fans were good Vantec Spectrum
It says:
Noise Level: 32.87dBA
Airflow: 46.43cfm
Was wondering if i had a fan controller and i lowered the current to the lowest as possible any idea how loud these would run at? Because 32.87dba is abit too loud :/ trying to get < 25
Posted by: oderus1671
vantec makes some pretty nice fans. I use the Stealth ones in my pc and they are pretty quiet. about forgetting the extra plug from the psu... dont feel bad, ive done that myself. guess i just forgot about it!
Posted by: goranpaa
Vantec fans are good quality. But blowing 46 cfm And that high noise level, I would say you are somewhat better off with a couple of these :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16835129042 See picture.
http://www.performance-pcs.com/cata...roducts_id=1361
http://www.performance-pcs.com/cata...roducts_id=3113
http://www.techgage.com/review.php?id=782
Using a fan controller, will lower the noise. But also the CFM.
Posted by: Caution
Ah yea but the problem is i live in Australia and yea i dont get such a big variety with 92mm LED fans. So yea the thing im trying to say is if i use my fan controller to put it to the lowest settings which i think is 7v? Would its dBa fall under 25dba? Or should i just get this fan:Evercool
Posted by: goranpaa
I still think you should get the Evercool instead of using a fan controller. Fan controllers are good, if you have a fan that is loud and very powerful, like the Vantec Tornardo screamer or the Deltas.
Then, you can lower it as much as possible and still have good airflow. But it wont be really quiet of coarce, as the Tornardo 92mm is 56DbA 119CFM (full speed)
Also check out, if you can find the AC Ryan Blackfire4 92mm in Australia.
For the door blowhole. Try getting a fan converter 90 or 92mm to 120mm.
It's a lot easier to find quiet but powerful 120mm's. They can rotate slowly but still push alot of air. Example: Sunbeam 120mm LED 26dBA 56 cfm. 1200RPM.
Posted by: Caution
oh riteo thanks for that evercool hre i come! Oh yea and one other thing is the side hole 80mm, 90mm, or 92mm It doesnt quite say on the website..
Posted by: goranpaa
This is a good fan for top and door blowholes, with normal screwholes. Just remove the 80mm adapter and you have a 92 mm fan.

Guess it's 90mm.
Posted by: Caution
ah well the problem is im looking for a led fan and there are only 2 sites that my friend is buying stuff off. And the only 92mm LED fans they have are:
92mm Quad-Blue (Never heard of this brand)
92mm Evercool
92mm Vantec
Posted by: goranpaa
Both the Vantec and the Quad are too noisy. Stick to Evercool.
38,5 CFM is good enough to cool the case in a good way.
Just make sure you have the most powerful fans in the back of the case as exhaust.
If you are planning on having the Evercool on all fan monts?
Then add this PCI exhaust blower to make the air pressure inside the case "negative".
For best performance. Place it as high as possible.

ok ty for that gornapaa!
I have another problem with the case which is the top part of it which has the 2 usb cbales 1 firewire, a mic and headphone slot. none of the cords seem to have a place that fit into my mobo... Here are the pics of the cords
http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/4451/cords7uq.jpg
This is the USB Connecntor thing for the front panel on my Mobo
http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/8894/fusb7gh.jpg
Posted by: goranpaa
Check out the included layout picture of your mobo. I have marked the firewire, USB and front audio connections.
Have you tried those?
Posted by: Caution
well as you can see the slot named "f_usb" on my mobo has a total of 9 pins while the usb from the case have 5 O_O
Posted by: goranpaa
Then I guess you need some kind of converter.
I can't tell you wich one though.
Maybe you should contact Gigabyte or the case manufacturers support?
Posted by: Caution
bah its ok i can live without em :] not like i will be using anyof them. Ty Anyway
Also i was just wondering since were on the topic of mobos I was gonna buy corsair twinx 1gb DDR400 ram and its timings are suppost to be at 2-3-3-6 i think it was. But some people say they dont come defaulted at 2-3-3-6 so u gotta tighten the timing to get them to the 2-3-3-6 timings so, how do i go about doing this? I checked my bios and it didnt look like there were any options for ram :/
Posted by: goranpaa
Yepp, I got 3-3-3-6 with my 2 gig TwinX set default.
So I had to go into the RAM Timing settings and correct it to 2-3-3-6. And then I read in a review, that you may even be able to run those Corsairs at 2-3-2-5. This works for me at least. But not lower. Then my PC refuse to boot. And I had to reset the CMos jumper.
I think you should look if you have this possibility to set the timings in the mobo manual.
If you need to download a manual? Then Gigabyte home have a PDF manual for downloading.
Also download the small Software "CPU Z" This tells all about your RAM, and CPU.
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
If you can change the timings? Then also set it to "1T" this will improve the performance. 2T is for 2 gig RAM sets. But the TwinX, 2 gig. Seems to be able to run at 1T anyway.
Then also download "Memtest" and let it run for at least 30 minutes. This to make a stability checkup.
http://hcidesign.com/memtest/download.html
Posted by: Caution
thats really weird.. I dont seem to have an option in my bios to change the ram timings. I can change the voltage of the rams though :/
Are there anyprograms that alow u to tighten your timings?
Posted by: goranpaa
Not to my knowlege at least. I tried to find one but did'nt succeed.
But I downloaded that PDF manual. Look under "Frequensy/Voltage control"
Then, "Memory frequesy for"
I think you can change "Auto" to "manual" there and set the timings. Not sure though.
Posted by: Caution
Already tried and read some other people with the same problem. So i guess ill ditch the ram for now and ditch my Mobo, GPU and CPU T_T! My rig was getting old anyways~ Hopefully i will be able to sell it to a friend for cheap~ Thanks anyway Goranpaa!

Suggests AMD64 s.939
Epox mobo
That Corsair RAM you talked about.
Dont get any mayor videocard right now. The DX10 cards is out later this year.
The cards below will see you thru.

lol those are a bit on the expensive side :P how well does this perform and overclock A8N-SLI?
Posted by: goranpaa
This could be a board for you, if you still wanna run the AGP card you have for a while longer and then later on just get a PCI E videocard.
It works with both AGP and PCI E videocards.
This hybrid board really works. I have seen some good reviews of it.
http://www.techbuy.com.au/products/...ID_LAN_ATX_.asp
In this boards BIOS, you can adjust RAM timings and the CPU frequensy to you liking according to reviews.

oh well honestly im trying to stick to Asus~ But in General Which brands make the top Mobos for Stability and overclockability? I have read some people saying Gigabyte arnt all that great in any of those aspects. they are a "mixed bag" sometimes producing excellent boards and sometimes some not so good boards :P
But How well does the A8N-SLI perform?
Posted by: goranpaa
It seems like a nice board. Very popular. But Personally I'm all for Epox. Great stability, wast BIOS. Also fast.
I have 2 Different Epox mobos.
Here are reviews of the A8N-SLI

ah is it true when Cornroe comes out the prices of AMD Processors and Motherboards will drop down in price as well?

oh so in your opinion should i wait for the cornroes to come and so i can make an upgrade or just buy one of those new generation AMD chips? Would they be a whole new socket? Im planning for this rig to last me atleast 3 years with minimal upgrades.
Oh yea and Mobo Prices would go down rite?
Ok these "AM2" Chips are they for Socket 939 Boards?
Posted by: goranpaa
I think I would either go socket 939 AMD X2 or maybe Conroe. AM2, I dont think is any long term upgrade. The AM2 thing is mostly about beeing able to use DDR2. But on the other hand DDR have better latency And AMD have always benefitted from low Latenscys. So the "gain" in AM2 / DDR2 is'nt really worth the money. Besides, there are romours about upcoming DDR3 for motherboards. But for now just romours.
I belive this whole AM2 thing, is AMD, feeling they must compete with Intel in the DDR2 area.
No, AM2 is a completely different socket.
As for Conroe. It may be a great thing. But there we have to wait and see, until the reviews is out.
Apart from the Conroe, and the new intel Conroe mobo's. I think the most mayor difference will be the DirectX 10 videocards ( Out late this year).
They will have a completely different architechture, to be able to deal with the much bigger pixel clusters that DX 10 is able to use.
It's said that the smallest Nvidia (Geforce) DX 10 card will have 24 Pixel pipelines for ex.
That is what 7900GT / GTX have today.
Also DirectX 10 will be incompatible with DX 9.0 cards.
Posted by: Caution
ok looks like i shall wait for the price to drop in a couple of weeks time and ill get and AMDX2 depending on the prices Direct X10 would still work on current PCI-E Mobos out there rite?
Posted by: goranpaa
Yeah, no problem. The Dx10 cards will work as long as you have a PCI E mobo.
I'm going to buy an X2 too as soon as the price drops here in Sweden.
Edit.
Both Nvidia and ATI, have annonced that they wont make any agp cards after the release of the DX 10 cards.
But I wonder, if they can afford to loose those customers, that hangs on to agp for different reasons. It will take time before the owners of PCI E machines are bigger numbers than those owning agp dito.

ah im so confused... in which 7600GS to get.. I have a choice from these
Gigabyte $190 Aus (Factory Overclocked 450/800)
XFX for $215 Aus (Factory Overclocked 500/900)
However the gigabyte includes the heatpipe.. Dunno if this really does much
Is it true that Direct X10 will be for Vista only?
And how much of a diff will i feel from my 128bit Geforce 6800GS DDR3 (450/1200)
Posted by: goranpaa
Well, as the XFX is a "fanless version" too. I would go for the Gigabyte, as the heatpipe is more effective on getting rid of heat faster.
I dont think you will have to get Vista to be able to run a DX 10 card. The main difference with DX 10 in Vista will be, that you get an enhanced 3D Windows.
The 6800GS is the faster card. But I have no idea how it will compaire to the 7600gs when you start to raise the AA and AF or any other quality settings on the 7600gs.
Posted by: goranpaa
On the other hand, this is a card that is very much alike of your 6800GS, performance vice.
http://www.techbuy.com.au/products/...TV_PCI-Ex16.asp
Or maybe this? if you still wanna run a 6800GS? http://www.techbuy.com.au/products/...ut_PCI-Ex16.asp
Posted by: Caution
well keep in mind that mine is a 128bit 6600GS not a 256bit :]
I guess ill prolly go for the 7600GS ty but this article states that Direct x10 is for Vista only
and so does this thread
And also iw as just wondering if i installed this mobo will i need to install Windows again?
Posted by: goranpaa
I have, on the other hand, read, that DX 10 will be backwards compatible with DX 9.0 So I dont belive that running DX10 on the 32 bit XP will be that much of a problem.
128mb or 256mb of video memory, wont make that much of a difference. As long as you have a gig of RAM or more. And is'nt playing massive strategy games with the latest graphics like Spellforce II for ex. Then it is good to have 256mb.
Yepp, you will have to reinstall Windows / reformat the hd. Othervice, the new mobo, wont recognize Windows.
Posted by: Caution
ah riteo thanks for that.
Posted by: goranpaa
You're welcome.
Posted by: Caution
Ah well ive been to a few sites that i googled about directx10 they all state that it will only work with Vista :/ Do you have an article that states that it will backwards compatible?
Posted by: goranpaa
Lol! the 2 articles I read about backwards compability to XP is gone!
Now they changed their mind and are saying that you must run Vista also. Good that you asked about this!
But I still wonder still if Microsoft will risk loosing customers in the end? I guess some will go Linux instead in protest.
That seems like a kind of blackmail. Even if Microsoft for certain will call it evoloution.
I do hope they will change their mind. I'm not THAT keen on getting Vista also. I'm perfectly satified with Windows XP ( 32 bit). And not looking forward to buy a Windows with "child deceases" Just to be able to play DX 10 games. And then wait a couple of years for Microsoft to get Vista working as intended.
Posted by: Caution
Oh no thats a big dissapointed ok well let me just ditch te 7600gs! What else do you think is a nice card that isn that too costly but will perform as good or better than a 6800gs a 7600GT?
Posted by: goranpaa
I agree! deeply dissapointed at Microsoft. Nearly as dissapointed as when I got Windows ME some years back ehem.
If you can think of getting a Radeon card also?
X850XT or X850XT PE. X 1800GTO, X1900GT

I guess the best bang for buck would be PowerColor ATI Radeon X850XT.
Just a slight overclock and you have a X850XT PE (Platinum Edition). Wich is nearly as fast as X1900GTX. That is the new "X850XT PE"
I have aPowercolor X850Pro, overclocked to XT PE speeds in my other PCI E rig. Unfortunatly X850Pro only have 12 pixel pipes against X850XT's and X850XT PE's 16 pipes.
But even the Pro version is a very good card.
Posted by: Caution
ah well those are a bit out of my price limit after all im only a meer student who works part time :P
Anyway back on topic!
I thought this Gigabyte Silent Pipe 7600GT was just perfect for me! Theres also the 7600GT by Leadtek which appears to be better at OC'ing but apparently the fan is quite loud. and the Reviews for the card im planning to get are great on newegg!
What do you think?
Posted by: goranpaa
Yeah, seems like a nice card....and silent.
Othervice Point of View (POW) is very good at making Geforce cards.
http://www.macotechnology.com.au/pr...pd3=PCIE%207600
Posted by: goranpaa
This is also a very good card as said and nice priced:
http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/index..._info.php?input
Powercolor X1800GTO 291 bucks
Posted by: Caution
ah thanks for that i t hink ill just go for the silent pipe! I been reading and it seems that the x1800gto and the 7600GT are quite on par. However the 7600GT is silent! And the shop im planning to get it from is quite close so thats another advantage~
Posted by: goranpaa
O.k. I belive you will like the 7600GT. Would be fun to hear your thoughts later on.
Posted by: Caution
sure no problem!
I also have a small question. If i were to install a new mobo and i had 2 HDDs. One with windows installed and one with games, media etc. Would i need to reformatt the HDD with the Games and stuff for it to be able to be recognised by the new Mobo?
Posted by: goranpaa
Yes, the hd with games will be recognized.
Posted by: Caution
awesome. So basicly i can just go over to a friends house and leand my HDD then? and hed just have to plug it in?
Also if say i got a Sata II drive 7200RPM, 8MB Cache will i experience faster loads and stuff as opsed to my Pata 7200RPM, 2MB Cache.
does Cache really have anything to do with speed?
btw dyu think a 400w Antec Smart power 2.0 will be able to cope with my new rig?
Which will prolly be
amd 4800+ dual core
Motherboard im not so sure
1gb Corsair TwinX
7600GT Gigabyte Silent Pipe
2x LED 120mm Fans
1x LED 92mm Fan
Posted by: goranpaa
Probably yes.
A Sata 2 drive is faster in every aspect than a P ATA and the bigger cashe the better.
Want something slightly faster than a SATA II? Then get a W.D. Raptor 10.000 RPM SATA.
Very fast! But quite noisy when it seeks.
A 400 W is'nt very good for future upgrades.
And as a 400W Antec Smartpower 2.0 cost 54.99 and a 500 W Antec Smartpower 2.0 is 69.99.
Those few extra bucks is really worth it.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817103937
Posted by: goranpaa
You can get a W.D. Raptor 36 gb SATA for Windows and games only. Then use the P ATA for programmes, that does'nt need the high speed of the Rap. I have used this kind of config, and it worked very well.
Posted by: goranpaa
Sorry, I forgot you buy your stuff in Australia. A bit stressed today. here is a Smartpower 500W
http://www.lmc.com.au/obs/website/p...p?prodid=554594
Posted by: Caution
Riteo thanks for that ill just stick with my PSU for now and if i do find it unstable then i shall change my psu dont think ill need the raptor though~
Posted by: oderus1671
400 is kinda skimpy, Im sure it will run, but with multiple hard drives, optical drives, and a high end video card, you may find it becoming unstable. See my sig for the specs on this PC, cuz when i overclock, things tend to go screwy. Nothing major, just little annoyances. I would get a bigger PSU as soon as funds allow.
Also, in my setup, i use the PATA drive (now having 2 of them) simply as a storage drive for MP3, video, and pics, and use the SATA drives for Windows and programs. I use 1 SATA for windows only, and the other for games and programs. They will benefit more from the faster speeds than just storage for junk.
And in respect to cache, bigger is better! RPMs are important too, but they tend to be noisier as well.
Posted by: Caution
its all good! once it gets all shitty then ill change it but if it will just run it with no problems im perfectly fine with that (:
Posted by: goranpaa
It will do with a 400W as long as you dont start to upgrade to hardware that is consuming a lot of power.
Posted by: Caution
Ok riteo small minor question. I decided onn getting a seagate 250mb SATA II HDD. Now ive only had expensive with installing PATA Drivers that require the IDE cable and One Molex Cable. Now i know i have Sata cables for my PSU. But it seems that on the newer Mobos they have Sata Plugs. So do i go and buy one of these
Therefore i have 1x IDE, 1x Sata Connector from PSU, 1x Sata cable that connects to Mobo? Is that correct? Or am i totally off...
Posted by: goranpaa
You just need a SATA power connector from the psu, and then the SATA cable between mobo / SATA drive.
Posted by: Caution
You dont need an IDE cable?
Posted by: goranpaa
Not for the SATA drive no.
Posted by: Caution
oh sweet thanks for that!
Posted by: goranpaa
You're welcome.
It's good to be rid of the IDE cable. If it is the flat broad version? It can act as an "air brake" inside the case and mess up the airflow if you dont hide it well.
Posted by: Caution
im getting myself some Rounded IDE Cables so no problem!
Anyway i have come to decide which mobo im gonna get my Choices are:
1. A8N-SLI PREMIUM (There are quite a lot of bad reviews for this mobo on newegg)
2. DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
Now i here DFI Boards are very Picky on components and for first time computer makers its not recommended because of the Hard BIOS Settings. Now im quite familiar with my Current Gigabyte BIOS how much Harder is the DFI BIOS to configure?
And do you think 939 mobos will drop at the same time or somewhere near the same time the 939 Athlon chips Drop?
Posted by: goranpaa
I would get the Asus or why not the Epox 9NPA+ SLI I have?
Very satisfied with it. Close to DFI Expert DR in speed and cheaper. Easy but extensive BIOS.
The DFI mobo's is picky and with the hardware yes. Maxtor hd's and G.Skill RAM is out of the question for ex. And the BIOS is very extensive and you will have a nervous time when updateing it, as the way you do it is different from most mobo's.
DFI mobo's is for the more advanced overclocking guys.
Yeah, I guess also the mobo prices will drop by then.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16813123246

oh riteo looks like ill go for the Asus.
Hrm now im deciding if i will either:
A. A8N-SLI PREMIUM
B. A8N32-SLI deluxe
the A8N32-SLI deluxe seems to have way nicer reviews and the people who gave bad reviews for the ASUS Premium Suggested to get a Deluxe :/ I really wonder if the price diff is worth it. Oh well i shall wait and see until the price drop
Posted by: goranpaa
I have seen some polls between AN32 SLI premium and de luxe. Obviously the de luxe is more popular.

O.k. And it will be really intresting to see how far the prices on socket 939 will drop? I will go for a X2 4400 cpu as soon the price is right

Yeah, Here in Sweden, the dealers are kinda slow to react to new releases and price drops. But they have been getting better lately. Before, you would have to wait about 1 month or somtimes longer for stuff allready beening released everywhere else. And god! I wish we had newegg here lol.

Ok awesome ihave just recently found out that the Price drops have been confirmed on the 24th in Australia Yay
Well honestly im planing on using my rig for gaming and was thinking of either the 939 x2 3800+ But i hear its not too great for gaming because of the agriculture and stuff :/ But have also read that gaming developers are soon to code their games so they are more Dual core compatible. Should i just go for the X2 3800+?
I actually might even consider this E6300 Conroe chip the price gap isnt too large and the overclocability seems to be over the top!

If I where you. I would wait and see what the reviews of the Conroe says first.
Conroe, seems to be a mayor system. If all that's been said about it proves to be true. I myself are very tempted to get a Conroe rig.
