Hey guys, hope its going well for you

Im coming into possession of a fairly new pc within the next 2 weeks and I have a few questions that I hope you can answer for me.

First of all I would like internet on this new computer and it is going to be next to the family computer I use at the moment, roughly between 2-3 metres. This family computer has 1MB adsl on it. I want to network these to up so i can use the printer, play LAN games etc but I also want to be able to use the net without having to turn on the family pc.

Now I've heard many solutions such as wireless, 2xnetwork cards, routers but when it comes to networking I'm a complete noob.

Family PC:

Athlon XP 2800+ Barton (socket a me thinks, not sure)
Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro Nforce2 mobo
2x 512MB RAM
XFX GeForce 6800GT
Pioneer DVD ROM
Plextor CD-RW
Audigy 2 budget version
Some crap 2.1 speakers
Maxtor 120gb HDD
19" Taxan CRT

New PC:

AMD 64 3200+ (2.4GHz), Socket 939
Asus A8V Deluxe Motherboard
2 x 512MB DDR333 Double Bank RAM
MSI ATi X800Pro 256MB 8X AGP
Samsung 16x DVD-R/RW+-
LG 16x DVD-Rom
Creative X-FI Platinum (with panel and remote control)
Western Digital 7200rpm SATA 200GB Hard Drive
BenQ FP767-12ms 17" LCD Monitor
Belkin 54g 802.11g Wireless PCI card
Creative Inspire T6060 (5.1) Speakers

The PC has 8 USB2.0 slots, 5 PCI slots, 2 x IEEE1394 (Firewire), 100mb/1Gbit LAN, onboard sound (disabled as I have the X-Fi) and the case is all black (the DVD drives are black as well), with a side window and an intake fan to keep it cool at all times. The system runs on a 400W PSU.

Any help appreciated

Chris

P.S. I live in the UK

to use the net independantly from the family pc, i think you will need to purchase a router to share the connection. Setting up a router is fairly simple, they mostly come with instructions most folks can understand. even when you hook them up to the router, the pc with the printer will need to be on to use it, unless you set up a print server, which i havent done, so i wont try to tell you how to do it. Do you have any wireless devices such as laptops, pda's. ect that will use this connection as well?

Any recommended routers. Do they come with cables or are these purchased seperately

Usually the routere will come with one cable. Linksys, Netgear, and D-link will all work fine.

Just read this article while looking for routers at www.ebuyer.com the router in question is a Linksys Etherfast Cable/dsl 4-port Router

os: Windows XP It never occurred to me that PPPoA would not be supported in any DSL equipment.

DO NOT buy this router if your ISP provides Internet using PPPoA. At the moment none of the Americanized flaccidware for this router support the protocol. The Linksys Lady politely expressed her uncertainty about when there will exist a version of the firmware capable of PPPoA, or indeed if they give a woowoo at all. Here I rest my chin on one arm but failed to see what is so '/UK' about this product...

Perhaps more interesting is that the term 'Point to Point Protocol over ATM' or its acronym was NEVER mentioned in any documentation at all. So the technology never existed, and they saved an extra paragraph explaining its incompetence.

I also had problems with the firmware being a little buggy. This applied to the updated version also. On making a selection in a combo box, it should reload the page showing the new options relevant to your selection. However when it reloads nothing is changed; the combo box still shows the old item. Do it several times and if it likes you eventually it will do something for a change. However this could just be an unlucky 13th (or may be I was) since I had no problems at all with my Linksys Modem and AP.

This has confused the shit out of me. To access my internet when I first turn the computer on I have to 'dial up' and once connected its fine to use. Also not sure if my computer is ethernet compatible, could someone please advise.

DO NOT GO FOR LINKSYS !! never !

You might try getting a cable or DSL gateway instead. They're even easier to set up than a router because the router and modem are built into one unit. Just make sure that you get the right type for your type of net connection. Unfortunately, they also are a bit more money than just a router as well.

I link D-link routers - get one with wireless. A simple 4 port should do fine and you can get 802.11g along with it for about $50 with a rebate on top of that. In reponse to PPPoA - Never heard of it, a DSL connection should normally use PPPoE and you must input user-pass in the router for it to authenticate - then you shouldn't have to "dial in" with a user pass on your PC since the router will be authenticating for you and acting as your gateway.

Thanks for your response guys, this is what stage I'm up to at the moment. I have got a creative router off ebay for £4.99.

I am going to buy 2 ethernet network cards http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....Y_BIN_Stores_IT

and will get a hub off my friend, should this all work together in theory?

P.s. here is some info that my isp has provided http://www.toucan.com/surf/help/def...ration_settings

looks like both PCs have LAN ports. why the need to buy seperate LAN cards?

Posted by: Foxeh

Correct me if I'm wrong but the asus mobo has wireless lan function not wired?

Posted by: oderus1671

when googling for the Asus A8V Deluxe Motherboard, it shows it having 1 rj45 network port, gigabit. you shouldnt need a seperate card for it.
