SMART failure on 3 different HDDs

Well I fixed a PC awhile ago, it had two hdds in it. Over the weekend I was just checking them out since I still had them. They kind of still work but they are getting SMART failure errors. One of them is for a multi read error the other is for a seek read error.. no clue what it means? Can these errors be corrected? I think western digitals website says to replace the drive.
Now what is really messed up is last night my gateway laptop that I just bought in feb of this year is now getting a SMART failure when I boot... I can F1 to continue... but it runs so damn slow. Not sure what the actual error is, did not run any tests.
Anything to do for these errors?

What diagnostic tool did you use?
Have you nearly filled the lappy's hd? That COULD be one reason.
Have you defragged lately?
What are the hd temp?
Try D Temp and check out.

Much problems with hd's is due to high temperatures.
Maybe you should get this?

Also try keeping the room temp as low as possible.

For the 2 desktop hdds I used WD lifeguard tools. I couldn't even run any of the tests, it fails as soon as it gets the SMART error and make me reboot the system. The only thing it lets me do is change it back to zero. A defrag was not done on those 2 as far as I know, capacity wasnt full. And where he told me he kept the PC... Im sure the problems happened because of heat, but I guess its permanent.
For the laptop, that is mine. I do alot of video editing and what not... pretty close most of the time to a 90-90% full of the 80gbs. Not full all of the time tho, take the video off the camera... do what I need to do and burn it to dvd and remove it from the hdd. Alot of the videos are roughly 20gbs or about 45 minutes it varies tho
Ill check out those links when I get home from work and post an update.
If the laptop hdd is shot, im sure there is some kind of 1 year warranty. No big deal tho, but if it can be fixed that be great

you will never get a SMART error because of whats on or not on the drive. its a hardware issue only.

I contacted gateway about it. They are shipping a new hdd, then I have to send the dead one back.

so like... wow i got the new hdd not even 16 hours later. but they replaced my 80 gig western digital with a 80 gig fujitsu .... make a difference in performance?

I dont think you will notice any mayor difference between those 2.
Fujitsu 80 gig
Average Latency: 5.56ms
Average Seek Time: 12ms
Cache: 8MB
W.D. 80 gig:
Average Latency: 5.5ms
Average Seek Time: 12ms
Cache: 8MB

As mentioned before, I did get my new hdd. Back up and running. I got the program you mentioned for the temp.
My temp kept bouncing between 116F and 120F. Is this bad, good..?

That is quite some hd temps you got. You need to cool the lappy down.
And lower the room temp.

I don't think ~40C is running too hot.. Getting there tho, to be expected in a lappy
