Interesting Monitor Issue

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm trying to fix a friend's monitor. It's a 19" CRT monitor. It worked fine for about 5 minutes on her computer until the picture slowly shrank and now, no matter how far we stretch the settings, there's still approximately 1 inch to an inch and a half around the outside. This doesn't matter what the resolution is set to. It's not a software problem, I've tried it on other computers.

I popped it open and nothing looks physically wrong with the inside. Any suggestions?

Maybe you are one of the 1 out of 100,000 that needs to install monitor drivers?? Usually monitors come with a cd. Windows normally handles it properly with its "default monitor" driver. Hers, apparently, is not.

Drivers were installed. Tried them from the manufacturer's website. Installed and recognized, didn't do a damn bit of good. This problem also occurs during POST, when it didn't before. I'm guessing it's something interally. The pins look fine too.

it needs to be replaced.

Probably the picture tube starting to give up. I had an Compaq CRT (MV 740) that started to behave like that in the end. First, the corners started to get slightly fuzzy and pretty soon after that, the picture shrank. I tried everything but as said, it whas the hardware.

So go with Redwenchs suggestion.

Hm, well, I was hoping it'd be something other than the tube. Weird thing is we plugged it in and it worked perfectly for about 5-15 minutes, then, coisidently, as I was installing Mozilla Firefox on her computer, the screen shrank. It took about 15 seconds for it to go from being stretched tight to the edges, to being 1.5 inches from the edges. So it wasn't a process that took a while... just weird. Haha.

It still looks fine, you just can't stretch it far enough. Well, unless someone knows somethin' else we could try, I'll pass the message along.

Most likely it is the monitor. Trying another video card wouldn't hurt before she resigns herself to using that monitor until its replaced.

At least in the short term you'll have a full view of what's on the screen. My monitor for my older system takes 10 minutes to warm up and everything is shifted 1/2 way over to the right until it gradually moves to normal position. For some reason it only does it when using an OS - when looking at BIOS it's fine. 'Tis dying too.

Well, I tried it on my computer in case it was an issue with her video card or her PSU not providing the video card enough power. And since it happens no matter what computer it's hooked up to, I know for a fact it's the monitor.

I was just hoping that all I would have to do is solder something back on or something like that. I opened up the monitor and there's no visible signs of corosion or anything bein' burnt. The only thing I can think of is that this was the first time the monitor was used in a while. It had sat in storage when they moved and she just brought it out not too long ago and I was the one who hooked it up.

But it did work for a little bit, like I said. She said there was some flooding in the storage area they used, but the box that it was stored in had no water damage on it and like I said, I didn't see anything wrong with it's interior.
