I have a external usb 2.0 hdd and its worked fine for a long time but today i started getting delayed write error messages, then finally it just died and it said cannot recognise usb device. i tested it on another pc, it works fine. i tried to use a usb 2.0 card reader it wont recognise that either. i have another card reader that will work for usb 1.0 and it recognises that. and all my other usb things work. i did a restart, i system restored, i tried to use a different usb hub on my system. i checked the drivers in hardware manager and nothing has changed that i can see. any idea on what it could be. sounds like it should be software but i couldent think why

The only thing comes to mind is getting a new chipset driver. The old may be corrupted.
If you have'nt updated it before and don't know wich chipset you have?
Download "Everest Home" from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
In Everest Home, check under "motherboard" and "chipset" + "northbridge chipset". Make a note of the model and head over to the chipset manufacturers home for the driver.

i did that but i can only find drivers for Lan, video, and sound. even on my origional disk for installing them, thats all i have.

Hard drives these days seem so fragile, in the past two weeks I have replaced 4 for customers of my small computer shop. Sometimes I find, removing the hard disk from its enclosure, and slaving it to another machine you are able to backup your data and then re-format the drive. During a format, the drive will be checked for errors which will be corrected. After the drive seems clean, load the data back onto it and put it back in the enclosure. That would be my best guess to help your situation.

well that would work if the hdd was corrupt but it not just this device. none of my flash drives work either. anything thats a usb mass storage device isnt running right. My webcam, pocket pc, midi keyboard, and everything else still works perfectly. My mobo doesnt need usb drivers so its not that and its not the hdd itself. Any ideas about what in windows or my mobo hardware might cause that?

I've seen weird USB errors with people running Windows XP SP1. Have you upgraded to Service Pack 2 yet? Also, do you get the errors when plugging in USB devices to the BACK of your computer. Sometimes people don't have their front-panel USB hooked up correctly and that will cause similar problems...

well both the front and back worked fine. the hdd has always been in the back though. and every other type of device still works. and it worked fine all day today except for about 5 hrs ago. ide have no problem getting a new pci usb 2.0 if i know that would fix it.
edit: maybe a windows repair? worth a try....

my guess is your usb 2.0 went out. could be windows or hardware though. try a format first.

yea, its the usb hardware. i wish i knew that before the format though. o well i guess its a good way to clean out the pc
