speeding up DVD writing process?

Not sure if this is soft or hardware question, so here it goes. I recently started backing up my dvd's (I got a teenage son who watches them on his XBox and scratches the crap outta them) . I bought the burner about 4 months ago on newegg and it comes with Nero. When i go to burn dvd's, whether its a backup or compilation of clips, it takes about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to complete. I understand a DVD holds a tremendous amount of data, but should it take this long with the PC in my sig? Seems like an awful long time to me. Its a Lite-On 16x Model #SOHW-1693S. Is there something like a tweak or something to speed things up? Ive killed startup programs, leaned down my backround running processes to next to nothing, disabled indexing, ect. I regularly run spyware checkers and defrag weekly. Is my rig just gettin old like me?

Maybe a silly question? But did you remember to set the burn speed in Nero?

is your burner on the same ide as your source? that would significantly increase the time.

Well, no i havent set the speed in Nero, i think its set to "find max speed" or something like that. Is this what you are talking about? Should i be setting it manually?

Usually, people who want to burn quickly, will have a DVD-ROM and DVDRW. Then they check the "Quick Copy" box which copies data directly from the source to the target. But if you are backing up store-bought DVDs than you haven't run into the problem of "shrinking" the movies onto 4gb discs? If you haven't, you certainly will. That is the time-consuming process as the data needs to be decrypted and the quality adjusted and the whole thing "transcoded". An an XP3200 you should be able to transcode and rip in just under an hour. Burning regular full-size dvd's at 4 x could be time consuming - we're talking 20-30 minutes. You have a 16x burner - unless you are backing up those xbox games and using a mod-chip, there's no reason to burn at 4x. 8x will decrease your time in half and is the preferred speed for error-free dvd backing up.

I have the burner on IDE 1 and a storage hard drive on IDE 2. Im using 2 SATA drives for OS and programs. When you say source, you mean the drive that Im copying the disk from, right? Guess I need to dig up the old dvd rom drive I had a few years ago so i can do the quick copy thing.

It shouldn't take that long to burn a single DVD using Nero. Which version of Nero are you using? It doesn't look like a hardware problem because it took less than an hour for me to backup a DVD when I was using an old "socket A" Sempron 2200 based system with the same amount of memory and yours is newer than that. I also used (and still use) the same model of dvd burner you mentioned. If you are using Nero 6, then there may be an update to the software at www.nero.com that will make it faster. I don't know for certain whether that will make the difference because I downloaded the updates before I burned any DVDs.
