Turning Off Monitor

Well yes, I somehow got my Dell PC that I ordered last FRIDAY and got free shipping. They delivered with AMAZING speed. One question I have though is, with my old CRT, I always left my monitor on, even when I turned off my PC because the previous CRT I had died from what I thought I turned it on/off too much. Is it safe to turn off an LCD every time you turn off the PC (daily for me) or can i just leave it in "standby mode" while my PC is off? Thanks.

Two schools of thought on this:
a) Because of the expansion and contraction of your hardware when it heats up and cools off respectively many believe it is best to just leave a system running constantly. Some major corporations keep their liquid cooled pcs in air conditioned rooms so it is always the same temperature and the machine stay running. Personally, I believe turning a monitor off at the end of the day is a good thing because of the lifespan issues of the equipment in a monitor and burn-in concerns with ghosted images on the screen.
b) That all hardware has a lifespan and that by keeping it off while not in use extends the lifespan of said hardware.
I'm part of the A school but the choice is yours, I don't know if anyone else has more insight into this issue ...

I usually turn my monitor off when I'm going out and won't be back to my desktop for awhile. I literally do it all the time, and my monitor seems to be fine.

I turn off my monitor, just for the reasons POnix says. Burn in risk and lifespan.

it only makes sense to keep it on if youre going to be using it frequently, which most people dont do. if the computer is going to be unoccupied for around 5 hours or more, turn the monitor and/or computer off.

There's always the electricity bill to take into account too. Even with it in standby mode it still uses power. Some recent studies have shown that a great portion of people's utility bills is from keeping clocks running in VCRs and DVD recorders and leaving computers on "standby" along with their monitors.
If your previous CRT monitor was worn out from turning it off, then you got taken for a ride. I have 2 CRT monitors that I've turned on and off - sometimes several times a day - for over 5 years without a problem. This also shouldn't be a problem with LCD monitors.
