My PC is freezing

Hi all,

I bought a new computer a few months ago and it's been working fine. However, recently, it's been freezing. Sometimes it freezes and I have to press the "reset" button to re-boot and sometimes this blue screen comes up saying something like, "error found...windows has been shut down to prevent any damage" yada yada...

I have not installed any unusual software or rather, any software that wasn't on my previous computer except limewire (music site) and some sync-ing software that I use for my handheld cell/mobile phone.

I have not fiddled with the registry except via msconfig where I disabled a few pieces of software from starting up when windows loads up like my Kodak camera, msn messenger etc.

I have carried out a system restore to about 2 weeks ago when I know it was working fine and still, occasionally, it will freeze. Last night the computer couldn't stay on for more than 5 minutes on about 5 occasions without it freezing. Then, it decided to work fine for the rest of the night.

Can anyone tell me 1. why it would be freezing and 2. what I can do about it?

Thanks very much!

p.s. the minor problem I've had ever since owning the computer is that it won't shut down on standby properly. It'll go to that blue screen I was talking about above. Any advice?

the yada yada would be telling you what the problem is. my advice would be to research it.

lol... yes. TBSD, the blue screen of death! write down exactly what it says next time and try to find some info about it on google. Try googling the exact error message.

You can also post it here and maybe its something we can help with

Shutdown to prevent any damage... mmmm sounds like the Overheating BSOD or.... OHBSOD. Lol, check your temps - try hmonitor or the motherboard temp monitoring utils. XP likes to pop these kinds of errors if your CPU fan isn't normal (missing a blade, wobbling, getting ready for take off etc.) or if your PSU Fan stops.

Another thing to consider is Limewire which is suspect. Most all other free p2p software come bundled with adware/virus and Limewire appears not to. Perhaps they're experimenting with rootkits these days? Many of which are installed as a driver into XP and then run undetected, bad programming could lead to a driver error giving you that BSOD as well. Maybe try a sys restore to before you installed it and see what happens, your downloads should survive.
