Hi, long time no post. ^^

Im going to be in the US in october and I want to buy a new computer and I wanted tips regarding the new CPU sockets and what should I do with them. Go AMD AM2? Intel Conroe? Stick with 939? please advise.

also I want to buy a new VGA card and I would like to spend something around 250$-300$ TOP! don't be shy and recommend stuff for 150$ aswell. I saw on newegg ATI X850XT 150$ when i compare it to the 6800GT its a really good deal.

thanks a lot to those who help.

I would say, check out the reviews for Conroe when it's out first.

And if you are planning going Windows Vista soon after it's release? You should'nt buy any of the more expensive cards right now. Because the DX 10 videocards will be out about the same time. The top cards of today should become pretty cheap soon after the release of the DX 10 cards anyways. A thing to consider if you are'nt going Vista. DX 10 will be incompatible with the DX 9 cards. There will be a DX 9.0L, that also will be included in Vista. But that version will lack support for the upcoming shader 4.0 and some other stuff.

And I know, that a couple of DX 10 games will come around that time. HALO II for ex.

Besides that, X850XT would be a great choise. Especially as you can easily overclock it to X850XT PE speeds.

I suppose the main question is how long you'll be in the U.S. for. If you plan to be here for a month or more, then you'll have the time to wait for online orders to arrive. If you plan on being here for only a week or so, then it's a risky proposition. My primary advice is to check out www.newegg.com and www.tigerdirect.com while you're here or even get an idea of what you want from either one or both before you get here.

If you plan to get anything from the brick and mortar stores, then try to look up malls in whatever metro area you're in that have more than 1 store in them or near by. (The yellow pages come in handy for this even if you don't plan on making any phone calls.) You can check for the best prices that way if Circuit City & CompUSA have stores close together. Some malls even have Circuit City, CompUSA, and BestBuy all in one place.

If this is the first time you've ever been to the U.S. of A, then also remember that it's a fairly large place. Keep www.mapquest.com in mind if you need directions to any place. We even use it ourselves.

One piece of advice: don't eat like we do! We are now the fattest people on earth and you don't want the medical problems that come with eating like an American. I get much more exercise than the average American, but I am still 45 pounds overweight.

You're welcome.

Got to admit I was too lazy on this one to point out all the things that needed to be considered with a new build at this point of time - I was going to let Goranpaa do it . If conroe is out - that would seem like your best choice, and unless AM2 seems to get any juicier than Socket 939 would be your best bet. As far as DX 10 you must also consider if you are going to wait for Vista next January - or if it becomes available earlier if that would be your primary operating system - than a dx10 card would be a better investment. Technology is definitely shifting right now. It always is, but we are on the brink of a new standard of Operating System and investing in the old stuff right now might definitely leave you regretting it later.

thanks a lot you guys for all the help.

I hope you eat healthier in the other country! Unfortunately, obesity is becoming our #1 health hazard now. The sad thing is that in some places in the world it's become our number one export. It even beats smoking as our single biggest cause of preventable death. Here in New York State smoking at indoor public places is illegal. Makes you wonder how long until they try to ban dessert! Good thing Hershey has some powerful lobbyists or I'd be a chocolate smuggler...

Ordering the stuff before you leave for the U.S. will work too - especially if you're in a country where the shipments to the U.S. are quick. When my sister was a missionary in Niger she wrote letters to her then fiance that didn't arrive in the U.S. until 2 weeks after she got home. At one point my brother-in-law was sure the wedding was off.
