computer skips sites when using back button

I have a hybrid computer using Windows XP. My main browser is FireFox. I also occasionally use IE and Mozilla. My email is OE. This evening I found that my bookmark menu does not drop down until I click several times. I can then move forward from one site to another. But when I click the back button, it skips the last site and goes to the previous one. For instance, in using Google, I will put in my search term and then, as expected, get my list of "hits". I can get to a site from this page, but when I use the back button, I don't go back to the page of hits, but to a previous page. Oddly, this happens with FireFox and IE, but does not seem to occur with Mozilla. I don't know if I have a problem with the mouse, have a virus, or a high jacker. Any ideas? (P.S. I am 68 years old, have learned to operate a computer fairly well, but lack a lot of technical knowledge.) Thanks in advance.

since it is affecting all of your browsers I might try an ad-aware scan and ewido security scan free downloads at cnet.com
