System Restore on WIN 98

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My mother in law accidentally deleted the Excell portion of her office program. If I do a system restore for here on the PC will it come back without having to reinstall the Office program which she no longer has the disk for. It was an older Office version (90's) or somewhere around there. If this will work, what is the best way to go about doing the system restore? It is on an older HP desktop. Will tapping the F8 key get me there, or would I need to go through the device manager to get it done? Any help would be grateful.

1. There is no system restore on Windows 98. Not that I know of.
2. In the off chance that there is one, it most probably doesn't work how Windows XP's does.
3. I doubt you'll recover your Excel program.

Could you recommend a good data recovery software for recovering the lost data?

It is possibly Office97. You should have the CD that it was originally installed with. Use this to re-install Office. To get good data recovery software, you would be looking at a lot of money. It would be cheaper to try & get your hands on an Office CD if you don't have it.

It's Office 4.2 that she is using. She does not have the CD to reinstall.

Office 4.2!? Jesus, dude, upgrade that computer with some new ram, back up everything you need, reformat it and install Windows XP (stripped down to as few services as you need) or install Windows 98SE with all the updates you can get your hands on and reinstall Office. Seriously... it really isn't that hard to get your hands on it. PM me if you need help with that.

I dought if Office 4.2 is even on CD. It is probably floppy only.
Serious upgrade required.

Try and access PC Beginner from a google search. Its fairly cheap and you can do a download or buy the disk.I have used it on XP, Win 98SE and will be trying to recover a win95 machine shortly.
So long as she has not reformatted the HDD you will be able to recover most of what you want, providing it has not been over written !

i liek ur processor on ur comp jd very nice but i dont think thier is a system recovery and you know you cna get office 2007 beta 2 btu you cant on that comp. The minimum required for office beta 2 is pentium 2 or 3 , 24 mb of video ram , 256 mb ram , 3 gigs free space on you hdd, and windows xp with sp2 those r minimums for beta 2.I dont think that will work ont hat comp with windows 98 siriously if ur mom needs a comp for typeing or work or w/e spen like 50-100 on a decint computer with at least xp on it.
office 4.2 wow i use 2007 beta 2 and some times 2003 the clasic.seriously don waste your time with 4.2

Were the instalation files kept on the hard disk after the instalation? I know office 11 does that so you can reinstall without the CD. Look for "MSO cache".
