i heard that microsoft are inviting hackr to hack them lmao i htink imma get vista for that protection i cnat wait

somehow i dont think it will be all the great, at least not righ away. i mean xp at least now has some code that is tried tested and safe, but with vista its all brand-spankin new. it wouldnt surprise me if it took several months to work out the kinks and get vista to xp's level of security

I would wait until SP1 is released before I considered getting Vista. I am using the Beta 2 version at present & find it fairly good, but I dunno what the security is like. I have been unable to get a third party firewall to install as yet, although AVG anti-virus will now install.
I haven't tried ghostwall yet. Maybe, when I boot into Vista again, I will try it.
Dual booting with XP at present.

I would never buy an OS until a year or so after it's release. Waiting for the first service pack to come out is a smart move.

I agree with the other guys. Even if direct X 10 and all that stuff is tempting, I'll wait a while. I dont trust Microsoft to release a OS that is free from bugs from the beginning. Just look how long it took XP to get where it is today. Not perfect, but works pretty well.

In the meantime they have come up with a pricing scheme. The mimimum price will be around $160 (US) for the least expensive Home Version Upgrade. From the sound of it most people will not go for that one though - but for the next level up from it that is also meant to be a Home Version.

I'm sticking with XP for most things and I'm sure glad that Vista Beta 2 was a true Scots deal - the costs of the little bit of electricity to run your PC while downloading the image file plus 1 DVD+R.

The highest tier version for gamers is gonna cost $400 I think, thats a lot of money for an OS, gotta love my student discounts- $10 booyah!

Posted by: shadysoldier

In GA, so i think you get a 10% student disacount so like 40$ =]

Posted by: pdnielsen

Wouldn't it be great if they started offering discounts to their Beta testers?

Posted by: rabidgecko

hmmm its a nice idea but i dont know if its practical. i mean you can find vista beta downloads on things like limewire and bittorrent downloaders. It wouldn't be fair to the people like us to legitimately sign up for the beta, and then some other people who can't be bothered to do it properly get the same discount.

it would be great though, i do agree with that

Posted by: Bishop

I'll just download it for free when it becomes convienient for me to do so.

/Arr.

Posted by: rabidgecko

/err

im not sure if you mean what i think you mean so i'll make the suggestion that the beta is indeed free to download now..unless you mean what i think you mean

hmmm...that is a dilemna.....get vista for free at the price of your morals or shell out at big bucks at the price of your better judgment.

Morals? Do those go with soup?

Posted by: rabidgecko

you cant blame me for throwing that out there. i go to a catholic school. we spent a whole year in class on the subject of morality. i already knew all it of from my mom.

there is a time and a place for morals. but they are different for every person. you know thats why ppl see things different ways.
but dont worry, i wont go telling the morality cops that you are a bad boy

Posted by: eleanorstang

I don't think there are too many people that actually konw anything about computers that would ever go with the first release of an OS from Microsoft. As far as morals go, its not to hard to throw all morals out the window when your standing in a computer store looking at all those really, really, nice high prices. Especially when you know that they are no where near worth that, and you can get them for a little bit of bandwidth and a blank.

Posted by: rabidgecko

i do agree with that. many things that they manage to sell to people who dont know all that much about computers are way overpriced. But i do try to support companies when they make a product that i use and enjoy. for example when it comes to games, i might download the game. if its garbage i get rid of it and i dont have to waste any money. if i like it, as i did with civilization 4 most recently, i go out and buy the game legit.

i think that a balance could be found between the two, if we wanted it. or people could just go and download whatever the hell they want.

just my 2 cents

You're either a consumer or a criminal. There is no middle ground.
