Interesting Problems

I'm fixing my father-in-laws computer for him and the main issue is that the computer insists on beeping, even as I am writing this it is beeping, even sending the beeps through the speakers attached to the sound card. Now while this might seem like it might be normal computer beep codes it isn't, and I know this because it will be quiet for ages and then will start a regular beep of about 2 or so seconds between or start cramming them out as fast as possible. At first I thought it was related to how fast the harddrive was spinning but ruled that out when the computer was just sitting there doing nothing and about 20 beeps come out in rapid succession. It's a Packard Bell iconnect 733R.
It just seems like a really bizarre thing as it apparently started doing it out of nowhere.
The other problem is that when playing videos through media player it will play a second or two and then the image will cut out but the sound keep playing, there is nothing wrong with the files as I have used the files on another computer and they work fine.

you should check the board manual for the code(s). but overheating is a likely culprit.

sadly as the system was a premade around 2000 it never came with the books
I checked the cpu and it's running at about 95 F. Which in my opinion isn't an issue.
and the beeping just starts and stops... like I said you can go for ages not hearing a thing and then it will start and then in a random amount of time it will stop altogether and then another 15 - 30 mins later it will start again. I'm using the comp at the moment to write this msg. Sometimes what will happen is it will start beeping when the power is turned on and keep going even once windows is loaded and then it stops for a little bit.
As I said it's an interesting problem and if it turns out to be something simple I am so going to bang my head on the keyboard. LOL
thanks for the suggestion anyways Red

I don't even want to ask why someone from Australia would give temps in the English system. even we don't use it for computers....

lol wasn't sure whether you did or not.... in that case the running temp is 35 C
<edit> I also just took out the mouse and keyboard to see if either of those were the problem and it was quiet for a bit and then beeped at me again, in an almost pleased manner. <edit>

That's a pretty cool temp for the CPU. What about the overall system temp though? Sometimes components other than the CPU can be overheating. I agree with redwench about the scale bit though. Some of us are trying at least to think in metric instead of S.A.E. (Standard American English) now.

metric blows.

SAE does not revolve around the number 10. That's the problem it has! It revolves around multiples of 4... 8 ounces to the cup, 16 ounces to the pint, 32 ounces to the quart. 4 cups to the quart, 4 quarts to the gallon. freezing temperature of 32, boiling point of 212. 12 inches to the foot, 3 feet to the yard...100 yards to the football field! I forget how many feet to the mile...

metric is sooo much easier to work with, its not even funny.

"from an engineering and machining background" you should know the difference between metric and s.a.e
even some of my teachers who came from england say they don't know why the entire world doesn't adopt metric.

Like most things rebelious young nations do (a trend we've unfortunately adopted in our adolescence) we threw away the existing and scientifically Righteous system in favor of some mythalogical could be might be ought to be system with the benefit of being able to tower over others, claiming not only is our system superior, but that you have to be of superior mind to understand and use it properly, which is unfortunately about as far from the truth as pluto is from your mom.
