How do I boot into safe mode?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've literally never been able to boot into safe mode on my computer, I just don't know how...

When my computer is starting up, I hit f8, but instead of it normally giving me the options, it tells me to pick a device to boot from. When I select my harddrive, it just boots windows normally. How do I boot into safe mode?

Normally you only get the option of booting to safe mode if the OS wasn't properly shut down. Then it gives you a 30 second count down or something like that before it starts in normal mode. I've noticed recently though a tendency for the "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message to appear when all I've done is restart Windows after downloading and installing application updates. Today that message came up 7 times in a row. I'd click "don't send" and another "report to Microsoft" dialog would come up, then click "don't send" again. I've also noted that sometimes Windows Vista will go to the black and white "do you want to start in safe mode?" screen when the previous time the shutdown procedure shut the computer off and it's supposed to start normally. Anyway, here's a link to the various methods of starting in safe mode. All I did was type "how do I start Windows in safe mode" into Google! http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

when in doubt, read the manual

Pressing F8 is correct, but I think you will find you are pressing it too quickly. You need to wait until the machine has posted & starts to access the HDD, then press F8 just before Windows starts to load.
My mobo has the option to press F8 to get to a boot menu, where I can choose to boot from HDD, CD-ROM, etc & I suspect that is what is happening.
You are being too quick, slow down abit.

I tried tapping f8 right before windows started up and it didn't work. I have like two different screens at startup. It's weird. Sometimes I see my asus logo, and sometimes I will see a phoenix award bios screen in all black, but it only comes up sometimes. I think that's how I get into safe mode.

EDIT: Never mind, looks like I can just use msconfig to get into safe mode. It sounds easier too!

You dont get into safe mode via the BIOS. You can use msconfig, but if you have a problem & are unable to boot normally then you need to be able to get into safe mode via the F8 key. You are just pressing the key at the wrong time.

Okay, I'll just have to experiment with it. Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Just as Kestel says. You will have to wait until just after the bios screen is gone and the monitor goes black for a split second, before you press the F8 key.
