WTF if dumprep.exe???

OK, so every once in a while, like once a week-ish), my CPU usage jumps through the roof with this program that just starts running. In the Task Manager, it shows as dumprep.exe and I think I traced it back to the windows/system32 file. Whenever this starts up, the CPU usage is always at 100% and the computer runs super slow like it just had a heart attack. Sometimes the dumprep program will be running once, but sometimes it shows up like 4 times on the Processes tab of Windows Task Manager. I just click to end the processes, and get a warning that ending a program thats runnin gis bad blah blah blah, but end it anyway, and the CPU usage drops back to like 10% again and runs fine.
If any of you have heard of this, or ahve seen it, or have any information of waht its doing, I'd love some help/guidance/whatever. Oh, by the way, I have Symantec (yes I know that it's not the greatest) anti-virus, Spy Sweeper, and Zone Alarm always running, and perform sweeps at least once a week, if that makes any difference.

It may be spyware. Run Hijackthis & post the result here. However, it could also be the genuine MS version, have a look at this to see how to stop it:

If it continues, then spyware may be the problem.

k, I've never used Hijackthis, and I looked it up on the web, but it looked pretty advanced, so I'm a little reluctant to use it. I also read about it on the windows site you posted. I'll try their recomendations the next time it happens. anyone else have any comments on this?
Goranpa, I checked out the site you posted, and I think that might help, well see. Thansk for the help.

Using Hijack this is pretty uncomplicated. Just create a folder to instahh Hijack in. Or you will have the logfile all over the place after scanning. Then just display the logfile here.
But that dumprep, seems busy reporting Windows errors now and then. Maybe you have some registry problems or others with Windows?
Run CHKDSK. And a registry repair / cleaner software.
Have you virus scanned with on line scanners lately?
Try Bit defender on line and Trend Micro house call.
Skip that resource hog Norton. It could be that antivius that is making problems. Norton meddle too much with other stuff.
Get Avast personal anti virus instead. Much kinder to your cpu and RAM. And it's free.
