Windows Media Player 10 stops responding for random amount of time.

I actually have two concerns. I've reinstalled WMP10 and Windows XP already.
1. When I play music using WMP10, sometimes it freezes and doesn't let me go to its menu, control what's playing, etc., but it keeps playing the music. The duration varies from maybe 30 seconds to as long as 4.5 minutes.
2. The rating column in the large playlist. When I initially view a playlist, all the ratings are invisible. Only after I "refresh" the playlist by going back and forth from other screens (Now Playing or other playlists) do the stars appear gradually.
Has anyone else been informed about these problems seen in WMP10? If so, it would be great if someone can help me out. Thanks.

Hi!
Well that problem may be due to outdated soundcard driver for ex. Have you updated it resently?
A quick work around, would be to install Media player 11 or winamp. Both those are better than WMP 10.
WMP 11 both looks a lot nicer and have better sound. Winamp is very good.

Ah, I didn't realize WMP11 was out.
FYI, this happened on two different sound cards (my new machine is a few weeks old). I believe it's more of a settings or corrupt files issue than hardware though.
I decided against Winamp for personal reasons, but I'll look into WMP11. But I may have similar problems with that, so I'd like this topic to remain active

As you say you have tried 2 different sound cards and reinstalled Windows. It could be somethings wrong with your Windows CD. That is if the WMP 11 does'nt do the trick for you.
I guess you have Service pac 2 installed too? And Windows fully updated? Othervice it could be a good idea to try that too.

Also keep in mind that WMP 11 is still in the beta stage so it does have some small disadvantages. It cannot easily be set up on Windows XP X-64 and most of the registry work arounds for it that were on the net are gone. Also, its ability to add music to your library is S-L-O-W! I would suggest making sure Windows is fully up to date and trying rolling back WMP 10 to #9 and then reinstalling it first.

It could be that the WMP 11 whas slow for you, because you used it on a 64 bit Windows. I have had the WMP 11 for quite some time now on 32 bit XP Pro. And it works flawlessly. And it's not slow.

WMP 11 cannot be put on the 64 bit edition of XP. That was my point. I run it in the regular 32 bit version of XP. If you have nearly 7,000 MP3s it is slow in adding them to your library. Otherwise it runs flawlessly and even better than WMP 10.
